Robert Pattinson On How The Batman Would Be Different In Future Sequels

Matt Reeves’ The Batman might quite possibly be the biggest film event of 2022.

After what seems to be the longest delay of the pandemic, the film is just a few months away and is sure to bring in a lot of crowd.

Even people who might be hung up on Ben Affleck’s version of the superhero or wondering whether another Batman film was really necessary might watch it anyway – because, let’s be honest, that’s essentially the power Batman holds.

So, given such a promising response to a new dark and gritty Batman tale, actor Robert Pattinson is looking forward to exploring the character in more ways in future films.

The Caped Crusader is sure to grow in strength, physically, but Pattinson promises that even his psyche and morals will go through a change and evolve with Batman 2 and 3.

While talking to Empire,

I’ve made a kind of map for where Bruce’s psychology would grow over two more movies. I would love to do it.

Pattinson’s Batman will be set on Earth-2 and not have any ties with DCEU’s Justice League and other upcoming movies like Black Adam and The Flash. In more ways than one can count, his version will be different than the previous ones.

In another segment of the interview, Pattinson described the character’s current state and said,

Bruce has been hiding away. He’s not really a socialite at all. He’s building all these little contraptions and things, just with Alfred. And even Alfred thinks he’s gone insane! He’s been out every single night for two years, getting beaten up and shot and stabbed and burnt, and it shows. There’s a bullet graze on the cowl, right at the beginning. I don’t think that’s been done before.

Producer Dylan Clark added that he has hopes to “lay a foundation” to build new stories upon as HBO Max spin-off series about Gotham PD and Colin Farrell’s Penguin are currently in the works.

And although Reeves has previously said he wants to tell this story through a trilogy, the director revealed that his focus has solely been on making the first film special,

I’ve only ever made each movie as a passion project. This even more so, because when you know something has been done well before, and is so beloved, you can’t just come in and sleepwalk through it. You have to shoot for something. We’re trying to leave our mark on this.

The director also revealed that Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne was inspired by everybody’s go-to artist when they have their grunge-rock rebel phase – Kurt Cobain.

(An inspiration foreshadowed by the music used in the film’s first trailer.)

When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’. That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse.

Reeves mentioned Gus Van Sant’s Last Days as an inspiration. The film also shows a character named Blake, inspired by Cobain and how his very-demanding rockstar lifestyle led to his last days being spent as a recluse and ultimately his demise.

The director believed no one else could do this version of Bruce Wayne justice the way Pattinson did.

If Pat’s Bat was inspired by Cobain, Zöe Kravitz explained that her Catwoman draws inspiration from the way actual felines move and fight.

It’d be interesting to see how all of these inspirations play out in The Batman when it (finally) comes out on March 4, 2022.
