The overworked Battlefield 6 rumor mill can rest easy for a bit.
In an earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced that Battlefield 6 will be arriving for both old-gen and new-gen consoles i.e., PS4, Xbox One, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. This effectively quashes the recent rumor floating around that the game will arrive only for PC and new-gen hardware.
Wilson, along with CFO Blake Jorgensen, also confirmed that the game will take full advantage of new-gen tech. In fact, Jorgensen even went on to say that the game will feel “special” on new-gen consoles. This could mean that the new-gen iteration will come with either its own mechanics, game modes, features e.t.c. or it could simply play, look, and run better like most other new-gen games do.
Additionally, it was also confirmed that the game will be officially revealed in June, and released sometime between October and December of this year. Battlefield recently put out a cryptic, tongue-in-cheek tweet that pointed to the June reveal period which confirms the rumour that the reveal was indeed delayed to June.
The fact that Battlefield 6 will be released for both generations is good news for the most part as, in tune with true war-time etiquette, nobody gets left behind. Additionally, it will be interesting how EA and DICE will make the game special “special” for new-gen consoles. However, it’s possible that the title might face further delays as it takes more time to develop a game for two generations than it does to develop a game for one.
While we have confirmation on reveal, platforms, and release period, there are still plenty of unconfirmed reports floating about for Battlefield 6. One of them points to the presence of natural disaster mechanics in the game while another says that the game will arrive on Xbox Games Pass on launch day.
When it comes down to confirming any of them, the ball, of course, is in EA’s court. Let’s hope we get more concrete news when the game is officially revealed next month.
