More than a month before its release, the tease-up game HBO Max is playing for Peacemaker is going incredibly well. On December 5, the company released an official behind-the-scenes video of Peacemaker and Vigilante as the newest BFFs in town.
The clip offers commentary from John Cena, Freddie Stroma, and director James Gunn on the peculiar love-hate friendship the two anti-superheroes share.
Vigilante and Peacemaker are similar on multiple levels—disguising their horrifying deeds as justice and having fun while at it.
Cena and Stroma describe Vigilante as a Peacemaker fan who thinks he is his idol’s BFF. He leaves multiple voice messages to Peacemaker, admires him, and gets jealous when the superhero tells him he’s not.
Stroma comments that Peacemaker thinks of Vigilante as his “annoying little brother.” The duo shares a friendship, with one obsessing over being a BFF and the other just tolerating.
A key difference between the two might be Vigilante killing people for pleasure and acknowledging it with an evil laugh. The video also shows his backstory, as Cena describes him as a busboy by day and a crusader of justice by night.
Stroma’s Vigilante is already being called DC’s Deadpool by fans, with his lunatic mindset making his actions a pleasure to watch.
The idol-obsessed superhero syndrome is similar to that of Hawkeye and Kate Bishop. It will be fun to see the duo’s chaotic energy on screen, especially when Peacemaker is ‘pessimistic’ of this friendship and Vigilante is just gung-ho about being BFFs with his idol.
If nothing else, they do understand each other’s unique (read violent and crazy) personalities!
By the looks of the teaser, Peacemaker and Vigilante might just become fans’ new favorites in DC town.
Peacemaker will premiere on January 13, 2022, exclusively on HBO Max.
