In the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Jared Leto’s Joker is getting a new look with Snyder fixing Joker’s much-hated heavy tattoos for a subtler look.
Jared Leto’s Joker look in David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad (2016) was panned by viewers with even the director admitting that he had gone overboard with the tattoos and “nosed” the whole trope of showing instability by the ‘Damaged’ written on Joker’s forehead. Moreover, most parts of Leto’s performance had hit the cutting floor due to changes in post-production.
Now, Zack Snyder, who is set to revive the character in his upcoming recut, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, will fix the look and probably accord more screen space to Leto’s Joker.
Snyder recently took to Twitter to tease Joker’s reprisal.
“Amazing character you created. Honored to have our worlds collide,” he wrote tagging David Ayer and Jared Leto.
The monochrome picture shows a blurred Joker with the camera focusing on the joker card he is holding. It is evident even from the blurred image that he doesn’t have the aforementioned heavy tattoos, and his hair looks longer than usual. His eyes and mouth seem somewhat hollow and he is not sporting the wide, scary grin.
The card-holding image of the Joker is reminiscent of Joker’s very first appearance in DC Comics’ Batman #1 (1940). It could be Snyder’s way of paying tribute to the original, or something he has simply revived for its serial-killer quality.
It was first announced in October 2020 that Leto will be reprising his role as Joker, leading to a lot of intrigue. From the look, it seems Joker would be connected with the Knightmare timeline, which was first teased with Snyder’s trailer of Justice League.
The look comes as a relief from the Clown Prince of Crime’s Suicide Squad outing where he was adorned with an inordinate number of tattoos, and his short green hair hardly seemed to complement the evil grin. Zack Snyder’s Justice League seems to promise a more aesthetically appealing Joker and is likely to have Snyder’s own spin to the action sequences, too.
Zack Snyder, who has directed a number of comic book films, including Watchmen (2009), 300 (2006), and Man of Steel (2013), had stepped down from the post-production of Justice League (2017), following the death of his daughter. Justice League did not do well with fans, and left many asking for an alternate version of the film showing Snyder’s original vision.
The recut, called Zack Snyder’s Justice League, is slated to release on March 18, 2021, on HBO Max.
