Netflix is set to release Army of the Dead this summer. Director Zack Snyder, who started his career with a remake of the 1978 horror film Dawn of the Dead, is making a full circle comeback to the zombie genre.
However, unlike his debut film or most zombie movies, Army of the Dead will feature a very different horde of the creatures. As one of the characters in the trailer notes: “They’re smarter. They’re faster. They’re organized.” Check out the trailer here:
The trailer, which opens to Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” states via a radio message that the zombies had been walled inside Las Vegas, leaving them to haunt the now abandoned city. According to Snyder, the story of their origin will be explored at the start of the movie.
The trailer also provides a look into the premise of the upcoming film. It looks at a group of ex-mercenaries who seem to be living discontented lives waiting for an opportunity at adventure.
A golden chance arrives their way when a casino boss offers them a proposition to break into the zombie-infested city and retrieve $200 million hidden in a vault under a casino. But time is of the essence as they have to wrap up their mission within 32 hours before the government nukes Vegas to get rid of the zombies once and for all.
However, whether the mission will be as easy with professional zombie killers is yet to be seen. The movie will establish a hierarchy of zombies with members ranging from alpha zombies, bride zombies, follower zombies, and of course, the zombie tiger.
Among them is their leader Zeus who is the prime alpha. His bite can create other alpha members, whereas the other alpha’s bites will create “shambler” zombies. They are all seen to possess greater agility, enhanced strength, and given their pack mentality; they will play a much superior antagonist role.
Other than the zombies, the movie will also look into the backgrounds of the human protagonists, specifically the relationship between Bautista and Purnell’s characters who play father and daughter.
Following the successful release of his cut of Justice League, 2021 has been a good year for Zack Snyder. But whether Army of the Dead becomes a similar success remains to be seen.
