Zachary Levi is all set to star in the live-action adaptation of the bestselling children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon.
The American actor, renowned as the eponymous hero in the Chuck series, has joined the cast of Sony Pictures’ live-action adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s popular book. Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955) is the story of a curious four-year-old boy who has the power to magically create his own world by drawing it with a purple crayon.
The story has spawned multiple film and TV adaptations over the years and is known for tugging at the heartstrings of young and old readers alike with its reaffirmation of the power of imagination and creativity.
Sony Picture’s adaptation is being produced by John Davis under the Davis Entertainment Banner. Michael Handelman and David Guion—who have films like Night at the Museum to their credit—are co-writing the screenplay. Since the details are scarce, what Levi will bring to the film remains to be seen.
Over the years, fans have obsessively overthought Harold’s adventures in Harold and the Purple Crayon. Some see Harold as someone who challenges the status quo and, despite his fears, draws himself a better world from scratch. Being in a post-pandemic dystopia, now would be as good a time as any to revisit the story. The dystopian context of the story won’t be lost on the older readers even as the coming-of-age track will appeal to the younger ones.
Currently shooting for American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, based on the life of NFL legend Kurt Warner, Levi has spoken about how Warner inspires him and how working on the sports movie brought him closer to his spirit of perseverance.
“Kurt’s story is one of relentless faith—in his own abilities but even more so in a higher power…When I read Kurt’s story, I identified with the quiet strength he found to persevere—that’s something I think anybody can recognize in their own lives…This is the kind of underdog story that sports movies are all about, and the fact that it’s true makes it even more special. I’m thrilled to be part of bringing his story to audiences,” he was quoted as saying.
American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story is slated to release in December 2021.
We can’t wait to see Levi’s take on Harold and the Purple Crayon!
