Joey Graceffa’s YouTube Special, Escape the Night may not have its fifth season on the platform. But chances are the fantasy thriller may find a new home soon.
It may not be this year, given that COVID-19 is still rampant around the world, but the showrunner has left the door open for it to return.
YouTube has been canceling its original programming, but there is hope for these productions to land elsewhere. As the most recent example, Cobra Kai just found a new home earlier this week.
Especially when it comes to the platform’s longest running show, you can count on at least one other streamer who will be interested in scooping it up.
This American murder-mystery reality web series hosted by Joey Graceffa follows The Savant (Joey Graceffa) while he is at an estate from the bygone era.
He has invited a number of guests to a party which requires them to act and dress as various personas from that era. Once there, they are cut off from the outside world, challenged to survive the night and eventually manage to escape the estate.
To do this, the guests team up with him to participate in challenges and escape room puzzles.
At the end of each episode, two guests are voted and pushed into a face off, a challenge to compete against each other, where the losing guest is eliminated via a fictional death.
This goes on until one or more guests ultimately win and are sent back to the modern world.
In an older interview, show’s creator Graceffa commented that the idea behind Escape the Night was inspired by an episode themed around murder mystery appearing on the popular television show Lizzie McGuire, that was itself closely related to the 1985 film Clue.
On June 23, 2020, Joey Graceffa announced via a vlog that due to COVID-19’s Impact on Hollywood and television, Season 5 will be suspended for now.
However, in the very same vlog, he teased a project in the “same world“, most likely meaning the show will return but on a different platform.
The show may also have been cancelled for all we know. But fans sure want a special fan season of the murder mystery series, and there is a sign up for the same as well. So the series is not dead yet, just hibernating.
You, meanwhile, can keep an eye out for more news about the show here, and plan your recap binge once we know more about the next season!
