Young Sheldon is back with a new episode after a month-long Christmas hiatus. The latest episode of Young Sheldon, season 6, episode 9 premiered on CBS on January 5, 2023, at 8 PM ET. New episodes will premiere every Thursday on CBS at the same time.
The previous episode ended with Sheldon in a dilemma about his new database and whether he should leave school to pursue it or not. His university tries hard to convince him to sign a deal whereby they can own 90% of the profits, but Sheldon’s parents understand this scheme and do not agree.
On the other hand, Sheldon meets external investors to discuss his idea. Although at first, they do not take him seriously because of his age, he later manages to convince them with the help of Dr. Sturgis that he is capable of handling his invention.
By the end of Young Sheldon season 6, episode 9, titled “College Dropouts and the Medford Miracle”, Sheldon is convinced that he should drop out of university to work on his database invention. During his presentation, the potential investors explain to him that a business cannot be a “part-time job” so he will have to commit to it fully for them to proceed.
When Sheldon speaks to his mother about dropping out, she is completely against it. In the end, Sheldon is still in a dilemma about whether he should go forward with his decision or not, especially since his parents are against it.
Two other subplots that the episode explores are that of George Sr. and Missy’s new relationship with Dean. The episode ends with Missy breaking up with Dean because he becomes way too obsessed with her Meemaw instead of giving her enough attention.
As far as Sheldon’s father, George Sr. is concerned, he is annoyed as others get credit for his triumphs as a soccer coach. Moreover, Coach Wilkins invites Pastor Robb to pray for the team before their match. George Sr. seems shocked to see Pastor Robb, who has been taking counseling since his wife left.
The episode does not move forward much with the plot, but there are a few typical funny moments involving Sheldon. As of now, Sheldon is in a dilemma about his future.
Since Young Sheldon is a prequel to The Big Bang Theory, we can guess what Sheldon’s decision might be. First of all, when we meet the adult Sheldon Cooper in TBBT, he holds a Ph.D. and is a research scholar at California Institute of Technology. Now, it is hard to believe that he dropped out of college to reach there!
It is possible that he drops out of university for a while, only to rejoin later but it’s unlikely, considering his parents are against it. Moreover, Sheldon from TBBT looked down upon people who prioritized anything above academics, so dropping out of the academic line doesn’t suit his character.
It is essential that Sheldon as a child fits the character traits of Sheldon Cooper from TBBT as Young Sheldon’s story is narrated by an adult Sheldon from TBBT as he communicates with his wife, Amy Farrah-Fowler. In other words, the two shows are directly related.
Coming to the database invention, it is again unlikely that Sheldon will actually pursue it, because adult Sheldon never mentions it in TBBT. For someone who cannot breathe without proving his superiority in front of others, it is unlikely that he would not talk about it at all if something like that were to happen.
As far as Missy’s new fling is concerned, it seems like Dean and Missy’s track will not go on for too long. The breakup will be final, and we might not see much of Dean anymore.
George Sr., on the other hand, is constantly frustrated because of work. He agrees with Sheldon dropping out of college even without listening to his idea, which shows his lack of energy and enthusiasm. This might adversely affect his relationship with Marie.
We know that in TBBT, which is set after Young Sheldon, Marie and George are already separated. So, it is likely that they’ll get separated in the course of this season.
As of now, let’s wait for the next episode to drop next Thursday on CBS!
