AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology was revealed last year as a direct competitor to NVIDIA’s performance-boosting DLSS technology. While DLSS needed specific machine-learning hardware built into the GPU, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) could function without this specialized hardware.
It would tap into the GPU hardware to enable a simpler algorithm that would help create crisp, clear images at a faster frame rate.
The most significant benefit of AMD’s solution was that it was not limited to NVIDIA’s graphics cards and could work on other platforms such as the Xbox Series X|S and even the handheld Steam Deck.
At GDC 2022, AMD has announced the FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0, which promises even higher framerates, better picture quality, and it can also be used on competing hardware.
Now it seems even NVIDIA graphics cards will be able to take advantage of FSR 2.0. AMD has shows that even cards as old as the GTX 1070 can benefit from the frame-rate boosting software, provided the game supports it. Newer video cards, like the RTX 3070 and the Radeon RX 6700 XT, will be able to output smooth gameplay at even 4K resolutions.
The Xbox will also get FSR 2.0, but the exact time frame for when the games will support the technology and when it will be available on Xbox consoles is still unconfirmed. AMD DSR 2.0 will be launched in Q2, 2022, with Deathloop and Forspoken being the first games to support the technology.
News like this could change the current and future landscape of gaming. NVIDIA has dominated the PC GPU market, thanks mainly to hitting the market first with the next-gen tech such as ray tracing and DLSS.
If FSR 2.0 can offer the same performance-boosting power as DLSS without needing a DLSS-capable card, it will be tough to choose DLSS over FSR, especially for game developers. Why go for the more restricted software when there is an option that gives the same results and is compatible with many more devices?
