Ever since its launch back in 2015, Discord has become the platform of choice for messaging, group voice/video call for gamers and streamers worldwide. The ability to make communities in Discord goes a long way in holding its user base.
Discord is so widely loved that it has often been requested that the app be functional on Xbox consoles. There is no official word of an actual Discord app for Xbox, but a recent update may have added a feature that will allow users to use the service.
A recent update to Xbox consoles introduced the Microsoft Edge internet browser to the platform. An older version was available previously, but the new Chromium-based version is much more robust and featureful. The idea is to allow Xbox users to use the Edge browser for whatever needs they may have mid-game. Discord, too, can be run from the browser.
Users have already started testing out the limits of Discord with the Edge browser on Xbox. The good news is that it works entirely while the browser is open, allowing users to read and participate in text chat easily. Voice chat is also an option if they are using Discord through the browser.
The bad news is that voice chat does not stay active if the user tabs back to the game. So, Discord can be used casually, but it will not replace Xbox party chat any time soon.
Xbox users are already requesting the dev team to create a workaround to allow Discord to run in the background, but it does seem like a long shot. We doubt Microsoft would take the trouble to ensure a competitive app is fully functional on its own platform. But, there is a possibility of Discord and Xbox partnering to make an official app release possible.
The new Chromium-based Edge browser also allows Xbox consoles to use other web-based services, such as playing games using Google Stadia.
It’s very possible the Xbox team will continue to improve the Edge browser on the console in the months to come. Microsoft has been surprisingly open to allowing partners to run their services on Xbox consoles, so we may get an improved Discord experience in the future.
