Wonder Woman 1984 has welcomed the 2020-weary crowds back to the theatres. The Gal Gadot-starrer, which is a sequel to the first Wonder Woman movie that was released in 2017, has crossed $85mn in global box office revenue after its first weekend. The film was released in theatres worldwide and was made available to stream on HBO Max from December 25th. The response to the film has been warm- but it has come short of the first film’s success.
WW84 picks up in the zany 80s in America, where Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, is working at the Smithsonian and still mourning the loss of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). She tries to keep inspiring the world to follow the path of righteousness, but at a time when opportunities to go down the wrong path are plenty, not many are exercising restraint.
Enter Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), a businessman looking to restart his oil business and one of the villains of the film, who obtains the power to grant everyone’s deepest, darkest wishes- for a price. Diana’s co-worker, Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), who seeks to leave her ignored and powerless self behind, falls into his trap. When thousands have their wish granted by Max Lord, the world is engulfed in chaos.
The film has made strong openings in several countries all over the world, including Australia, China, Korea, and Singapore. However, its collection is significantly smaller than that of its prequel, which was a commercial and a critical hit. Although the film has been affected by the pandemic, reviews suggest that the story of the film itself is why the collections have taken a hit.
Nonetheless, the earnings of Wonder Woman 1984 has led Warner Bros. to greenlight and fast-track the third film of the series. Gal Gadot will return as Diana Prince and Patty Jenkins will reprise her role as the director in the concluding part of the trilogy.
If you haven’t watched the movie yet, Wonder Woman 1984 is available in theatres and can be streamed on HBO Max.
