Wonder Woman 1984 has officially become the biggest streaming release of 2020. The Patty Jenkins-directed second film of the Wonder Woman trilogy was released on Christmas in select theatres and on HBO Max. Though the film has received mixed reviews, it has broken quite a few records and has bolstered the film industry, which had been affected by the pandemic.
Theatrically, Woman Woman 1984’s performance has been middling. It opened at $16.7 million on its first weekend and grossed more than $85 million in total. Although these numbers have made it one of the biggest movies to be released during the pandemic, the film’s streaming achievements are much higher.
According to reports, the total viewing hours of HBO Max tripled after Wonder Woman 1984 was released on the platform. Half of HBO Max’s direct subscribers watched the film on the day it came out and a large number signed up for the streaming service to watch the film. In fact, a survey conducted by Screen Engine has revealed that 19 percent of the subscribers for the streaming service had not canceled their subscription only to get access to the film.
Its success on the streaming platform has been so massive that Wonder Woman 1984 dethroned Disney+’s Hamilton and Disney Pixar’s Soul as the largest streaming release of 2020.
Even a few years back, the importance and effect of OTT platforms in the movie industry was a hot topic of debate. With Wonder Woman 1984, HBO Max has become one of the popular streaming services and OTT platforms have sealed their position as a significant identifier of a movie’s success.
