Michelle Obama seldom falls to surprise and inspire us! Even as the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has us all locked in and blue, the former first lady got together with Netflix to release a special documentary titled “Becoming.”
It will be based on the events that followed the release of Michelle Obama’s bestselling memoir Becoming, including a world tour.
On Monday, April 27, Michelle took to Twitter to announce that the documentary would be stream-ready on Netflix from May 6.
I’m excited to share that on May 6, @Netflix will release BECOMING, a documentary directed by Nadia Hallgren that shares the stories of the amazing people I met after the release of my memoir. During this difficult time, I hope you’ll find some inspiration and joy in this film. pic.twitter.com/fqsIbhXYeL

The Obama Effect
Going from being key political figures to being private citizens is a struggle every U.S. President and their spouse have to face. But no one does it better than the Obamas!
For a power couple as beloved as Michelle and Barack Obama were for two full terms, the transition has been unique, especially in terms of the influence they continue to have on the American people.
Ever since her husband left the White House in 2016, Michelle seems to only have gained in her popularity among the masses.
Obama’s memoir, Becoming, was released in 2018 and quickly became the bestselling hardcover of that year. To date, it has sold over 10 million copies, according to the book’s publisher Penguin Random House.
As recently as last week, Michelle lent her voice to a public service announcement for her fellow D.C. residents with information about coronavirus testing.

Before that, the couple continued their nonpartisan outreach through the initiative, When We All Vote, to boost voter turnout.
Higher Ground
The Obamas’ tryst with social media and pop culture to impact change in society led them to venture into film production. Their production house Higher Ground, set up in the spring of 2018, gave us the Oscar-winning documentary American Factory.
And now, as part of the Higher Ground’s deal with Netflix, we will get to see the power couple themselves on the small screen.
The documentary has been directed by Nadia Hallgren, who was a part of Michelle’s world tour as a cinematographer.
Speaking about the documentary, Nadia recently made a statement that it aims to capture who the former first lady “is in this moment and the way she’s reflecting on the entirety of her life, not just her years in the White House.”
The documentary will feature the global book tour taken by Michelle after the launch of her book Becoming.
Each of these tours were recalled for the unique and intimate bond shared between the audiences and the former First Lady. So much so that it will now be etched in the virtual world forever.
