An official confirmation comes from Winston Duke that his character M’Baku will be a part of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Currently, filming for the movie is taking place in Atlanta with Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler back on the director’s chair.
Duke’s confirmation came from Collider with whom he sat promoting his new indie drama Nine Days. When asked about Black Panther 2, he spoke about how emotional it all was, especially having to take the story forward in light of Chadwick Boseman’s death.
It was very emotional to read the script. It was emotional to pack to go back to set. But we’re all a bit of a family now and we grieve together, and we’re making something really special.

Marvel has already decided that the role of T’Challa will not be recast. Instead the sequel will find a fitting way to honor Boseman’s legacy and will bring into focus other deserving characters that make Black Panther a wholesome universe. Director Coogler too, shoulders many expectations, as his first Black Panther movie was the only superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
So far, only Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gureira (who will also be appearing in the Wakanda TV series) and Martin Freeman have confirmed their involvement in the sequel. According to Marvel’s creative head, Kevin Fiege, most of Black Panther’s cast will be returning. So it is not too far-fetched to assume that we will also be seeing Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya and Florence Kasumba.
A new name that will be joining Black Panther 2 will be Tenoch Heurta (of Narcos: Mexico) playing Namor, of Atlantis. Noting that both civilisations, Wakanda and Atlantis have been rivals for time immemorial, it is believed that Namor will be the movie’s main antagonist.
This puts into question what can be expected of Duke’s M’Baku, the Jabari leader, who has also previously opposed T’Challa’s authority.
Will he join hands with Wakanda or try to take over its leadership? Or perhaps, he may be tempted into something altogether unexpected. Time will tell. (And of course, a trailer when it does release).
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to release on July 8, 2022.
