Wonder Woman 1984 debuted in theatres and HBO Max on Christmas day, along with a Disney tentpole title Soul on Disney Plus. A classic example of their long-slated rivalry.
Keeping in mind the beef between Warner Bros. and Disney, it is improbable that Wonder Woman 1984 will find a home at Disney Plus.
The Wonder Woman sequel was initially supposed to release in theatres on June 5, 2020. But the film kept getting delayed due to the covid19 lockdown.
As the months kept passing by, Warner Bros. grew desperate to release their film. The desperation did help them in coming up with an interesting marketing strategy.
Warner Bros. decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 free for one month on their streaming partner HBO Max. Of course, along with a worldwide theatre release.
The sequel did a pretty good job in the box office, given that over 50% of the theatres are closed, and people are still uneasy about going to public places.
Nevertheless, after the one month period, the sequel film will be exclusively available in theatres only. This move is quite beneficial to HBO Max in the long run, as many new subscribers are joining the streaming services.
This might have caused a little bit of trouble for Disney Plus, however.
Previously, the Disney streaming service had charged their subscribers with extra fees to lease their tentpole film Mulan. It helped them bring in some additional raw revenue, but the subscribers were a little uneasy over having to pay an additional fee for a movie.
HBO Max let the Wonder Woman sequel be available to their subscribers for free for a month, in addition to the 7-day free trial policy. Thus it won the strategic marketing round. The streaming service has seen a rise in their subscribers, and many are likely to stay.
How Disney will tackle this situation, well, only time will tell.
