Will There Be A Space Jam 3?

Welcome to the Space Jam, again!

This is what Warnes Bros. had to say about their latest release, Space Jam: A New Legacy which is currently running on theatres as well as streaming on HBO Max. The film is a sequel to the 1996 movie Space Jam.

Yes, it took Warnes Bros 25 whole years to give us a sequel and my overexcited self has already started contemplating about a third part. Jokes apart, I would personally not be super hopeful of a third part.

Space Jam: A New Legacy didn’t really leave much plotlines open for a sequel. In other words, it says “that’s all folks” quite on the face. So, if there is no sequel, I would not really be surprised.

But that being said, the first film didn’t leave much space for a planned sequel either. Yet, here we are! Bam, 25 years later, we got our sequel. So don’t give up expecting. Wink!

Will There Be A Space Jam 3?

As of writing this article, Warnes Bros have not officially confirmed any plans of another Space Jam movie.

But, Baron Davis, former NBA star has expressed his interest in directing another Space Jam film in a conversation with the New York Times. He said:

I created this world called Nearth where Nearthians exist, and they protect against pollution, things like that and basically, LeBron, Steph, all the major stars, they’d go down to Nearth and realize that we’re ruining our planet.

But unfortunately, according to Davis when he offered his idea to basketball stars LeBron James and Steph Curry, they turned down the offer. So if you have been looking forward for a confirmation of a third Space Jam film, you will be disappointed.

The likelihood of a sequel happening depends completely on how much money A New Legacy collects. It is running in the theatres as well as streaming on HBO Max, so there is scope for it to make good business if people like it.

But unfortunately the reviews do not seem that promising for the film. Not to say no averagely rated film has made money (in fact too many have managed to do so), but just that considering the film is streaming on HBO Max for free, I am not sure how many would be willing to visit the theatres to catch the movie.

I guess we can just wait and watch. Knowing that it actually took 25 years for Warner Bros to come up with a sequel, I would not expect a Space Jam 3 in the next two three years. After all, it requires planning and production and more importantly, the franchise needs to be successful.

I personally feel that a sequel maybe helpful in holding the legacy of Looney Tunes and the concept of the franchise should be continued, since it is quite unique and well framed. So maybe it will be fun to actually watch a sequel and who knows, maybe it will be better than Space Jam 2 and get better reviews.

What Can We Expect From Space Jam 3?

In the first Space Jam (1996), we saw Michael Jordan step up to rock the screens. In Space Jam: A New Legacy, it is LeBron James a.k.a NBA’s biggest star at the moment takes over the position to help the Looney Tunes.

So following the pattern, I think we can expect the Looney Tunes to recruit another famous, modern athlete to take up the challenge. As we know, the franchise is known for its unique idea of combining iconic sports stars with the legendary Looney Tunes.

So if a Space Jam 3 is on the cards, maybe it could feature a female sports star or an Olympic medallist for a change since the first two have already featured male athletes. It depends on who is doing well in the sports world a few years from now, when a sequel can be expected.

And of course, it goes without saying that the sequel will feature our beloved Looney Tunes. Frankly speaking, they are the sole reason why I am interested in the franchise. They carry too many fond memories from our childhood after all.

What Is Space Jam 1 And 2 About?

In Space Jam 1, Michael Jordan was recruited by the Looney Tunes to fight against monsters in space. He was supposed to beat them in a basketball game so that the Looney Tunes could get their freedom.

The sequel follows a similar framework in a modern context, which makes sense since this is 2021 and that was 1996. Lebron James and his son is trapped in a virtual space of a video game universe called The Server Verse.

The Looney Tunes is recruited to save his family. Like its prequel, the film is studded with celebrity cameos. While the 1996 film featured live-action versions of the celebrities, the sequel actually animates them to blend them with the Looney Tunes.

I think this is a great change and makes it a more pleasant and realistic watch. Let us hope Space Jam 3, if it is on the cards also makes some fun changes to look forward to.

About Space Jam: A New Legacy (Space Jam 2)

Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is an upcoming American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, and Terence Nance.

The film is a sequel to Space Jam (1996) and stars basketball player LeBron James, as well as Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe. The film also features the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny.

Like the previous hybrid films, it will be a combination of live-action and traditional hand drawn 2D animation with some CGI effects

Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer rather than follow his father’s footsteps – find themselves trapped in Serververse, a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle).

LeBron must save his son and get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against Al-G’s digitized champions on the court, the Goon Squad.
