None of us expected Magne and Saxa to, well, even kiss. Let alone have sex! But yet here we are, nurturing the shock of our lives.
Just kidding; I called this long ago.
A retelling of the Norse Myths in modern times, Ragnarok follows Magne, the reincarnation of Thor, as he deals with the stress of high school and newly found Godhood. Magne is on a mission to fight the wealthy Jotun Family (the archenemies of the Gods) who exploit the Earth for their gain, and hopefully figure out a way to survive Ragnarok this time.
Last season though, we saw Magne and Saxa (one of the Jotun) hooking up in a rather unexpected turn of event.
But the question now is whether the unexpected sex would mean Thor and Saxa get together; Is there a ship on the horizon?
Of course, sex doesn’t mean they’ll get together. It could be a one-time thing if the writers decided on it. But Ragnarok has been following the Norse Myths pretty accurately so far, so there’s a valid reason for speculation. Why? Hang on; I’ll spill.
Thor and Saxa were lovers in Norse Mythology and had a son named Magni together, who was one of the few to survive Ragnarok. The showrunners may go with this arc and make Saxa pregnant after her encounter with Magne in season 2, ultimately leading to the two getting together.
However, there is another possibility that the only common grounds Saxa and Thor find is the child. Saxa was Thor’s mistress, not his wife. And the show has been doing an excellent job of setting Signy with Magne, who might later be revealed as Goddess Sif (Thor’s wife).
1. Thor And Saxa’s Relationship
There wasn’t much to their relationship in Season 1. Its in Season 2 that we see Magne and Saxa develop an unusual rivalry. Both are driven by their own set of agendas and often clash in fights, but there is a mutual sympathy over similar family issues.
The Nordic version of Thor and Saxa is pretty similar. If you don’t already know, Saxa is based on the giantess Járnsaxa. The Gods and Giants were enemies in the myths (with a few exceptions), which naturally meant Járnsaxa and Thor weren’t supposed to like each other.
And they didn’t, at first. But even important Nordic figures weren’t immune to the enemies-to-lovers trope. Soon enough, Járnsaxa and Thor fell in love and had their first child Magni — The eldest of Thor’s four sons.
1.1 Will Saxa be the mother of Thor’s first child?
If the show follows the Nordic Myths, Saxa will be the mother of Thor’s first child Magni next season. But nothing is confirmed yet, the writers could delay the pregnancy announcement or dismiss Thor and Saxa’s encounter as a one-night stand.
For context, though, it’s important to remember that Magni survived Ragnarok while Thor himself didn’t. This could have significant implications for a show that’s leading up to Ragnarok. (For reference: check the title of the show.)
If I had to place bets, my money would be on welcoming little Magni in season 3.
1.2 Who were Thor’s sons? Were they gods too?
Thor had four sons, but the most well-known were Magni (born of Járnsaxa) and Modi (born of Lady Sif). The two young Gods represented Thor’s “Might” and “Wrath”, respectively.
The truth is that Magni is significantly stronger than Thor in terms of physical strength. There’s a story in Prose Edda on Thor’s battle with Hrungnir (a Giant).
After Thor killed Hrungnir, the jötunn’s meaty leg fell on Thor’s neck. Thor tried to lift it but could not. The other Æsir (Gods) rushed to help, but no one was strong enough to do the job. That’s when Magni, who was three nights old, mind you, came in and lifted the giant’s leg like it was nothing.
See how ill it is, father, that I came so late: I had struck this giant dead with my fist, methinks, if I had met with him.
Magni to Thor after casually lifting dead weight
I doubt they’ll make Magni as strong in the show, but Gods am I hoping to see a fighter baby giggling and kicking ass.
2. What do we know about Ragnarok season 3?
While we don’t know anything about Season 3, sources claim that Netflix has already greenlighted the show. The release date depends on when the season goes into production (thanks a lot Covid).
3. About Ragnarok
Ragnarok is a coming-of-age drama building on and contributing to the Norse mythology. Created by award winning writer, Adam Price, and produced by SAM productions, Ragnarok was launched exclusively on Netflix in 2020.
The cast of Ragnarok also includes Henriette Steenstrup, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Synnøve Macody Lund, Line Verndal, Fridtjov Såheim, Bjørn Sundquist and Gísli Örn Garðarsson.
It takes place in current day, in the fictional Norwegian town of Edda in Hordaland, Western Norway, which is plagued by climate crisis and industrial pollution caused by the factories. The factories are owned by the Jutul family, who are actually four Jötnar (giants) posing as a family. They are challenged by Magne, a teenage boy who is the reincarnation of Thor. In season 2, he is joined by the other gods, namely Odin, Freya, and Týr.
