Netflix’s latest drama Firefly Lane has taken the streaming world by storm with its arrival. It’s no wonder that the series has catapulted to such popularity. It has all the ingredients for the perfect binge-watch, after all—friendship, romance, passion, and plenty of drama! So, is a new season coming?
It’s not yet officially confirmed, but it seems likely to me!
The first season of the show takes us through an emotional rollercoaster as it spans the friendship between Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) from the 1970s to the early 2000s. It ends in one heck of a cliffhanger, with the once-inseparable friends estranged after Kate cuts Tully out of her life for reasons yet to be revealed.
With the cliffhanger at the end of season 1, it’s only natural for you to be seeking answers about the next season and when it’ll be coming out. I had the same questions right after I finished bingeing the whole season in two days!
It looks like even though Firefly Lane hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season yet, it’s pretty likely that there will be one.
1. How Likely Is Season 2 of Firefly Lane?
Although Netflix hasn’t officially ordered a season 2 yet, there are a few reasons why I’m pretty sure we’ll get to see one!
For starters, there’s a ton of story material left to cover in the best-selling book series by Kristin Hannah, which the show is based on. The first season didn’t even reach the end of the book’s plotline, let alone start with the plotline of the sequel Fly Away. So, if the producers decided to order a season 2, they’d have plenty of source material to continue with.
“I think there are a lot more stories to tell, if we’re lucky enough to have a season two, of those girls going through high school and what that’s like,”
Maggie Friedman told Entertainment Weekly
“They’re only in eighth grade when we leave them. They’ll have a lot of good teen years and fun 70s, growing up times with the great music and the fashions and all of the cultural changes. I think it’s just really interesting. I’d love to keep telling us that those stories and those actors are so good. So, of course, I would want to keep seeing them.”

Another factor to consider is the commercial success of Firefly Lane—it has been trending at #4 on Netflix since its release on February 3, and has got everyone talking about it. Netflix is not one to pass up the opportunity to create another commercially successful season if past instances tell us anything.
2. What Can We Expect in Season 2?
Considering that season 1 ends on a major cliffhanger where Kate stops talking to Tully completely, we can assume we’ll likely find out what went down between the two.
There are plenty of theories as to what went wrong. Some fans speculate that Tully may have slept with Kate’s husband Johnny (Ben Lawson) again. Others think the reason may be the same as in the book, where Tully ambushes Kate on her talk show by accusing her of being an overprotective mother.
Whatever the reason may be, season 2 is likely to hold the answers.
3. Who Can We Expect to See in Season 2?
We can certainly expect to see Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, who play the grown-up versions of Tully and Kate, respectively. Creator Maggie Friedman tells us we will get to see more of the girls’ teenage lives. This would indicate that we would also get to see Ali Skovbye and Roan Curtis, who play the characters’ adolescent versions.
Since the girls’ teenage years are likely to get a good chunk of screen time, we can also expect to see the actors who play their parents. Beau Garrett, who plays Tully’s mom Cloud, would likely feature in season 2. We can also expect to see some of Chelah Horsdal and Paul McGillion, who play Kate’s parents, Margie and Bud.
We can also expect to see appearances from Yael Yurman, who plays Marah, as more of the early 2000s story unfolds.
Whether or not we will get to see Ben Lawson, who plays Johnny, is up for debate. The character leaves for Iraq at the end of season 1 to work as an embedded reporter. But then, we might just see a follow-up to what happens after he gets injured in the war zone in the season finale.
4. When Will Season 2 Be Out?
Season 1 was ordered by Netflix in February 2019. It was then filmed from September 2019 to January 2020, and was released in February 2021.
Bad news—by this timeline, and considering it hasn’t officially been ordered yet, don’t expect season 2 to arrive before mid-2022!
5. About Firefly Lane
Firefly Lane is based on the eponymous novel by Kristin Hannah and has been adapted for Netflix by Maggie Friedman. The first season landed on the streaming platform in February 2021 and has quickly acquired a dedicated fanbase. While there is no official confirmation yet, Firefly Lane is all set to be renewed for another season.
The seies is a Netflix drama centered on the lives and friendship of two protagonists, Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey. The series follows their individual trials as well as the tests their friendship is put through right from their teenage years in the 1970s all the way up to their 40s.
