When Kadokawa announced its production on a new Spice and Wolf anime, I was jumping for joy.
When the first and second seasons aired in 2008 and 2009, it just so happens that this handful of episodes became my comfort TV anime. That’s how many thousands of fans, including myself, came to love the series for over a decade.
Despite the mystic vibes the music is giving, the show gives me some form of relaxation. Not only is the relationship between Holo and Lawrence wholesome; rather, every episode leaves a big smile on your face.
That’s why fans are just dying to know: is Kadokawa producing a reboot of Spice and Wolf; or will Kadokawa just continue with a Season 3 from where the 2009 anime left off?
Without further ado, allow me to enlighten your minds on what the possible future of Spice and Wolf can bring to its beloved viewers!
Will There Be Another Season of Spice and Wolf?
Very few details have been released by Kadokawa; only that it’s producing another Spice and Wolf series because it’s the series’ 15th anniversary.
And since little has been shared, nobody knows for sure whether a remake will be released, or a Season 3 will be produced.
However, judging from the teaser that was released a few weeks ago, many fans are speculating a 3rd season is in the works because of the captions tagged within the teaser:
The narrative of Holo (the Wise Wolf) and Lawrence (the merchant) continues: Should we Set Off on Another Adventure?
The question, “Should we set off on another adventure?” is a subtle nudge to its viewers whether a 3rd season should be produced.
And my oh my, it couldn’t be more than perfect timing! Fans like myself have been waiting for many years and in tears: we’ve been waiting for over a decade for this beloved moment to come to pass!
When I saw the teaser, the animation is stunning — it is drop-dead gorgeous compared to the animation scenes presented in the 2008 and 2009 anime!
This spectacular teaser is only a preview of how the new Spice and Wolf production would emulate the fine artistic lines, bright sceneries, and beautiful character designs of many TV anime shows produced today.
As I’ve said before, we don’t know the studio behind the new Spice and Wolf production yet.
But we hope that the animation will be on par with modern shows produced by MAPPA, ufotable, Studio Bones, TMS Entertainment, A-1 Pictures, and CloverWorks.
The change in animation scenes and character designs in the teaser is very apparent but understandable; after all, the 1st and 2nd seasons of Spice and Wolf came over a decade ago.
And mind you, back in 2008 and 2009, the animation of Japanese TV shows in those times are not particularly crystal-LED-clear, unlike today.
Like many fans, I’m expecting a grandeur Season 3 of Spice and Wolf animation to unfold this year or the following year.
How Many Episodes Will The Reboot Or Season 3 Have?
Whether it’s a reboot or a Season 3, one thing is certain for a Spice and Wolf TV anime that is currently on wthe drawing board; and that is, the number of episodes.
Kadokawa already decided the number of episodes it’s planning to release on the Spice and Wolf anime it’s going to produce. But this is a secret from many fans because the series is in its early stages.
Just think about it: Kadokawa hasn’t even selected an animation studio from which the new Spice and Wolf anime will come out.
It’s likely waiting for a tender offer from many popular animation studios: Wit Studio, OLM Studio, TMS Entertainment, CloverWorks, and the list goes on.
Right now, no one knows how many episodes there will be.
But since many Japanese TV anime shows are opting for only a 1-cour season, fans can speculate that the reboot or Season 3 of the new Spice and Wolf anime will consist of only 11 to 13 episodes.
A one-cour season doesn’t take too much time from viewers. It’s quick to finish even in one sitting. Even young viewers aged 13 to 15 can binge-watch a 1-cour season in 5 to 6 hours if the series only has 11 to 13 episodes.
Will Holo And Lawrence Still Get Together In The Reboot?
Holo and Lawrence will still likely get together in the reboot (if Kadokawa is planning a reboot).
These star-crossed lovers are destined and couldn’t get enough of each other (just rewatch the first few episodes of Season 1 and you’ll understand again).
In any case, I’m rewatching Seasons 1 and 2 of Spice and Wolf now just to prepare and refreshen myself of the romance that these two lovebirds have.
Despite Holo’s youth and child-like appearance, she has a cheeky and seductive side that the innocent Lawrence can’t seem to shrug off no matter where he turns.
Mind you, the light novels are still ongoing. And spoiler alert: one of the most recent chapters released in the light novels is titled, “A Wedding for Wolves”.
When I realized that this title came out in the published Japanese light novels, I was ecstatic.
The Wise Wolf and merchant traveling distant lands did end up together; so, here’s just me and thousands of fans wishing we could see this gorgeous scene animated on a future Spice and Wolf TV anime series one of these days.

Spice and Wolf is a romantic fantasy slice-of-life adventure, first published in the form of a light novel by Isuna Hasekura in 2006. It has since been adapted into manga and anime and has a strong fan following.
It follows the story of Kraft Lawrence, a 25-year-old traveling merchant, who peddles goods from town to town, aspiring to set up his own shop in the future. One day, he finds the Wolf-spirit Holo, who was locally worshipped as the Goddess of Harvest, asleep in his cart.
