Produced and written by The Russo Brothers, more famously known for MCU films like Avengers: Endgame, Extraction was an immediate hit on Netflix. Though the plot and screenplay didn’t score well in the critics’ books, Sam Hargrave and his team are working doubly hard for a bigger and better sequel.
Chis Hemsworth returns for Extraction 2 after his character narrowly escaped death in the 2020 film. The sequel, which is due in theaters in June 2023, will see the return of Tyler Rake for another high-stakes mission, though other plot details remain a mystery.
But even before the second instalment’s premiere, Joe Russo of the Russo Bros. has commented on whether there will be an Extraction 3.
In an interview with Collider, the producer and writer of the Netflix Original answered positively about a threequel’s possibility but explained it all depends on the sequel’s success. Read his full comment below:
I mean, you never want to anticipate the audience’s response, but there’s certainly room for an Extraction 3. There are some surprises in Extraction 2 that could open up the world of Extraction. On top of that, I think Sam Hargrave did an incredible job with this film, and I think that he has topped the first one.

The official synopsis for Extraction 2 doesn’t give us much information, but I’ll let you read it and hatch your own theories about it:
[Extraction 2 Synopsis] After barely surviving the first movie’s events, Rake is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.
The first two Extraction films are based on Andre Parks’ Ciudad, but if there were to be an Extraction 3, we’re not sure if it would be a continuation of the same story or an original.
Considering Rake seems to be following an entirely new mission in the sequel, the film series could follow an anthology format, with different standalone storylines in each instalment.
After its release, Extraction was crowned as the highest-watched original on Netflix, a title currently held by Knives Out 2. So, if the sequel can replicate or outdo that level of popularity, I’m sure the streaming service will greenlight a threequel. Extraction 2 will hit Netflix on June 16, 2023.
