Andor has been widely described as the grittiest Star Wars series to date. The Rogue One prequel quickly won hearts, leading to the show being renewed for a second season even before the Season 1 finale aired.
The explosive Andor Season 2 finale aired today, which brings us to the question of whether there will be a second season and what to expect from it. Well, there’s good news and bad news for Andor fans.
Andor is definitely returning on Disney+ for a second season. However, Season 2 will also be the last. No official release date for Season 2 has been announced yet.
1. Release Date and Filming
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy told Collider that filming for Andor will begin in November 2022. If we consider an eight-month-long schedule followed by a year of post-production, we can expect Andor Season 2 to release around July 2024.
According to Gilroy himself, fans should not expect Andor Season 2 anytime before 2024. The cast will not finish filming before August 2023, so we can expect a mid-2024 release. So, the wait is going to be quite long. But we’re sure it will be worth it!
2. Which timeline will Andor Season 2 be set in?
As we know, Andor Season 1 takes place in 5BBY. Before the series premiered, showrunner Tony Gilroy had mentioned that Season 2 would focus on a different timeline from Season 1. While the first season spans an entire year and ends in 4BBY, Season 2 will span several years.
Season 2 will be divided into four time periods, with three episodes each. Each period will depict one year, bringing Andor closer to the events of Rogue One. The first arc begins in 4BBY and ends in 3BBY, the second period will be set during 2BBY, and so on. The season finale will directly lead to the events of Rogue One.
3. What to expect in Andor Season 2?
Andor is set as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Like the first season, Season 2 will also focus on Cassian’s journey before the events of Rogue One. Though we don’t know much about the storyline of Season 2, we can expect certain things based on our knowledge of the Star Wars universe and Gilroy’s hints.
Season 2 will largely focus on Cassian’s journey toward building the Rebellion. In the final moments of Season 1, Andor joins hands with Luthen and becomes a part of the Rebellion. So, Season 2 will focus on Cassian’s preparation to become a leader and the obstacles that will come his way.
We will see how difficult it is in reality to build a Rebellion and how Cassian actually gets to it. Being in Luthen’s team will help Cassian get first-hand experience in building the Rebellion. So, we will get to see how it became what it was in Rogue One.
Season 2 will surely feature Cassian’s first meeting with Mon Mothma. Mothma is also one of Luthen’s closest allies, so it’s pretty much expected. Mothma will play a significant role in Andor Season 2, as we’ll see more of her trying to hide from the Emperor while building the Rebel Alliance.
Season 2 will also feature the Ghorman Massacre, which ultimately forces Mon Mothma to abandon Coruscant. Mothma also introduces her daughter to Davo Sculdun’s son in the finale. We will find out about the consequences of that in the next season.
4. What’s Confirmed About Andor Season 2 So Far
If you are a Rogue One fan, you already know the significance of Yavin 4. For those of you who don’t, Yavin 4 is the planet where the Rebellion’s main base is located in Rogue One, as well as the original Star Wars series. Since Andor Season 2 will move closer to the year 0BBY, it makes sense that some of the events will take place in Yavin 4.
Gilroy has also mentioned that Andor’s droid from Rogue One, K-2SO, will definitely appear in the series in a “spectacular fashion”. Since Season 2 will be Andor’s last season, we can expect to see K-2SO soon. Apparently, there are quite a few storytelling reasons why K-S2O does not appear in Season 1. So, our best bet is that it will feature in the next season.
Finally, Season 2 will definitely feature the deadly Death Star, which our titular hero helps defeat in Rogue One. The Season 1 finale post-credits scene confirms that the prisoners were indeed building the Death Star.
The final moments of the season finale offer a glimpse at the Death Star, which will be the Empire’s most deadly and potent planet-destroyer. So, it is a given that the Death Star will be an integral part of Season 2, especially since the season’s finale will lead us into the events of Rogue One.
