The Ahsoka season 1 finale aired this week and it looked far away from what we call closure. The episode ended on several cliffhangers, and it did not seem like this is the end at all.
So, it’s obvious that fans are expecting the series to return for a second season. However, as of now, the future of Ahsoka is not confirmed, like many other Disney shows.
As of now, there is no official confirmation about Ahsoka returning for season 2. However, if everything goes smoothly, the series should be renewed for another season.
1. Disney Has Not Discussed Ahsoka Season 2 Yet
Unlike a conventional TV show that depends on viewership and ratings for renewal, Disney has a different approach for its Marvel and Star Wars franchises. It combines ongoing series with standalone miniseries and movie tie-ins.
Therefore, it would not be surprising if Ahsoka did not have a second season, and instead served as a bridge to Dave Filoni’s announced movie that is supposed to conclude this “era” of Star Wars, which includes The Mandalorian, Grogu, Bo Katan and their allies.
This is more so as Disney has not revealed any plans for a second season of Ahsoka, unlike Andor, which was confirmed to have two seasons before merging with Rogue One. The Mandalorian was renewed for a second season even before the first one aired.
We do not know if Disney intends to make Ahsoka a single-season miniseries that leads to Filoni’s movie or if it will have more seasons. This creates a lot of speculation and curiosity among the fans as that would have a lot of implications.
2. How Ahsoka Could Affect Filoni’s Movie
If Ahsoka only serves as a build-up to Dave Filoni’s upcoming film, it would mean a lot of things. Firstly, this implies that a significant part of the plot will involve another challenge of intergalactic travel, since Sabine and Ahsoka are stranded in a different galaxy. Moreover, to end the Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll storyline, they will have to find a replacement for the late Ray Stevenson, who played Baylon. They will also have to explore the Mortis gods story in more depth in a film.
The Mandalorian’s role in this saga is unclear, as the only hint of Thrawn’s comeback is a vague threat from Ahsoka. The show does not seem to be prepared to deal with this imminent danger. Furthermore, the timeline of the movie’s release is ambiguous. It seems that Filoni’s movie is still in the initial stages of development, which means that the fans would have to wait for at least two or three years after this finale to see the continuation of this story.
A more reasonable course of action would be to give both The Mandalorian and Ahsoka another season to prepare for the upcoming movie, and then proceed with the movie if it is supposed to be the final chapter of these stories. However, Disney might be reluctant to end both The Mandalorian and Ahsoka permanently, considering that the rest of their Star Wars slate, which will also lose Andor by then, is not very promising.
It is puzzling why Disney has never mentioned a second season of Ahsoka, especially after that cliffhanger, where fans are left in suspense about what will happen next, and no one knows if there is a planned second season or if they have to wait for years for a movie. Let’s hope Disney clarifies it soon.
3. Ahsoka Season 2 Potential Release Date
Ahsoka season 2, if it is in the works, is likely to take some time before it is released. It seems improbable that it would debut next year, as other Star Wars projects such as The Acolyte are slated for 2024.
Based on this year’s releases, it appears that Disney is comfortable with having Mandalorian and Ahsoka seasons in the same year, which suggests that 2025 might be the earliest possible date for the return of the story of Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra. However, there is always a chance that Thrawn might appear in another show or movie.
4. Will Ahsoka Appear in Another Star Wars Show?
The first season of Ahsoka ends with her and Sabine being stranded in the same location as Ezra, with no apparent way to return to their own galaxy. However, with their whereabouts and Thrawn’s comeback being known, it is likely that they will be rescued soon.
This raises a complex question. Star Wars series have shown that titles are irrelevant. Boba Fett was introduced in The Mandalorian, Din Djarin and Grogu appeared in The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka’s live-action debut occurred in The Mandalorian rather than in her own show. It seems that any of these characters could show up in any of these shows.
Therefore, it might make the most sense for Sabine and Ahsoka to appear in The Mandalorian season 4 (if it happens) next, since it is both the central point of all these other shows and the next one on the schedule. It is also assumed that Boba Fett will not have a second season. However, this is only a speculation and not a confirmation.
