The HBO reboot of Sex and the City was assumed to be a limited one-time series when it was first announced. It made sense that the makers were banking on the massive fan following and nostalgia to get a sure-shot hit.
But now that things are really in place, I was wondering (and I’m sure I’m not the only one) if there will be a Season 2 of And Just Like That…
As of writing this article, there has been no official news of a second season. However, showrunner Michael Patrick King had earlier shown interest in further continuing the show.
In an interview with Emmy Magazine, King revealed that he would be quite interested in continuing the show beyond the initial season. He further added that he sees no reason to not keep going if they have more stories to tell.
While vague statements expressing interest do not really mean anything, it still shows that the makers are thinking in lines of renewing the show for a second season.
Chief Content Officer of HBO Max, Casey Bloys, also expressed interest, in a future of the show beyond Season 1, in a recent interview with The Vulture. He said it depends on the availability of the cast and crew involved.
To tell you the truth, it would be a conversation because I have no idea. They kind of came together to do this. They were all really busy and doing other things. So it is certainly a conversation we’ll have. But we haven’t decided anything or done anything. I’m going to leave it up to these guys to figure out what they want to do, but I’m very happy with what they’ve done.
Having said all that, I also want to draw your attention to another development that might affect the renewal of And Just Like That.. for a second season.
Chris Noth, who plays Carrie’s husband Mr. Big in the show, has recently faced serious allegations of sexual assault. Although his character is not a series regular and died in the opening episode itself, the allegations have put a halt to potential discussions involving Season 2.
His association with the show might have serious consequences on its future and whether or not the show will be renewed. As of now, nothing is confirmed and we have to wait and watch out for further news.
Upon the allegations coming to light, actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon released a joint statement expressing their disappointment and showing support to the victims.
Here’s how it read:
We are deeply saddened to hear the allegations against Chris Noth. We support the women who have come forward and shared their painful experiences. We know it must be a very difficult thing to do and we commend them for it.
Keeping all of it in mind, the future of the show is a big question mark as of now. Let’s see what happens.
If you ask me personally, the show itself is as pointless as its original counterpart. It is anyway a sexist, superficial, nostalgia-driven reboot. Not all classic shows need to be reborn. So personally, I don’t think we are losing out on anything amazing if this is the end of the road for the show.
