It’s been a bit of a rough year for the popular Adult Swim comedy, Rick and Morty.

The season 7 finale aired this week, and this season had a shockingly low rating compared to previous seasons. Rick and Morty season 7 had an alarmingly low 73% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 43% audience rating.

The low rating can be primarily attributed to the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland, who served as the voice actor for both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.

Roiland left the team after facing alleged accusations of sexual harassment and domestic violence. He was replaced by voice actors Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty.

As fans have been familiar with Roiland for a while, many expressed concerns about the drop in quality after his departure. However, we might be judging Cardoni and Belden too early.

Now that the season 7 finale is out, it’s time to talk about Rick and Morty season 8, hoping it will make up for the drop in quality and help us get used to the new voice actors.

1. Will there be a Rick and Morty season 8?

Rick and Morty will be returning for season 8. The series was renewed for seasons 8, 9, and 10 in January 2023. Co-creator Dan Harmon has confirmed that season 8 has already been written.

There was never a doubt about Rick and Morty season 8, as writer Rob Schrab had already confirmed that the writing for season 8 began in May 2022.

The producers further mentioned that the writing for seasons 8 and 9 was in progress in July this year at the San Diego Comic-Con.

The show was officially renewed for three more seasons (after season 7) in January 2023, but the makers definitely had an unofficial guarantee from Adult Swim. It does not make sense to start writing the script otherwise.

The co-creator of Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon, recently spoke to RadioTimes about the upcoming season 8 of the adult animated series. Harmon mentioned they’ve finished writing season 8 and are working on season 9.

Here’s what the co-creator said:

“It’s all been very challenging, I was certainly never gonna let the show die. We’re writing season 9, we had way too much quality work down the pipe that I would have never let go away. Because I’m so proud of what people even get to see in season 7.”

In other words, the future of Rick and Morty is secure. Our weekly dose of absurdism and existentialism is here to stay for at least 3 more seasons.

2. Rick and Morty Season 8 Potential Release Date

As of writing, there is no confirmed release date for Rick and Morty season 8. However, season 8 is expected to be released sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.

If we look at the previous release dates, there is usually a gap of a year between 2 seasons. Seasons 6 and 7 arrived in the second half of the year. Therefore, we expect season 8 to arrive in September or October 2024 at the earliest.

3.Why Rick and Morty is Here to Stay

Given the popularity of Rick and Morty and its loyal fanbase, I would expect the series to continue for several more seasons. It should follow the route of other iconic adult animated shows such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park.

The Simpsons is airing season 35, while Family Guy and South Park have 22 and 25 seasons, respectively. Rick and Morty may not be as popular as these iconic shows, but it comes close.

The thing with these adult-animated comedies is that they do not follow a linear storyline. The episodes aren’t exactly connected, so you can pick any episode from any season and start watching it as long as you know the premise.

They are similar to children’s TV shows such as Spongebob Squarepants, Scooby Doo, or The Flintstones, where you do not have to follow the show from the beginning to make sense of it.

The advantage of such a structure is that people can start watching your show from any point and still become fans. Rick and Morty follows the same structure, so it is easy for creators to renew the series for more episodes as long as its popularity is intact.

Therefore, as long as there’s demand for Grandpa Rick, we’ll get more of him and Morty!
