It almost feels like the end of an era when I think of Peaky Blinders actually coming to an end. Arguably one of the best television series of all time, the notorious gang managed to keep us glued to the screen for quite some time.
The sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders has come to an end with the series finale airing on April 3, 2022. Naturally, for all of us who call ourselves fans, there’s just one question: what’s next?
Although initially, the makers had plans for a seventh season of the BBC series, they had to change their minds owing to a number of reasons. In other words, Season 6 is the final season of the series.
Even though Peaky Blinders is not returning for a seventh season, the story will still be continuing in an upcoming feature film. A potential spinoff series is also on the cards. So, all is not over for Peaky Blinders.
Why was Season 7 of Peaky Blinders canceled?
Although the makers initially had plans for a seventh season of Peaky Blinders, it was canceled largely owing to the impact of the pandemic. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the makers lost a year and thus decided to shift the story to the big screen.
According to Steven Knight,
“The original intention was to do seven series, but COVID has stolen a year from us, and we felt what would be a great idea is to, almost in place of that seventh series, is to go onto the big screen.”

Ahead of the release of Season 6, Knight also revealed that another major reason why plans for a seventh season were canceled was the tragic death of actress Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly in the series.
“We just felt, also with the loss of Helen [McCrory], that it all seemed to be pointing towards doing what I’m calling ‘the end of the beginning’. Let’s end the beginning, then let’s do the film. And then let’s see where we go in terms of spinoffs.”

What is next for the fans?
Now that we know that there will be no seventh season of Peaky Blinders, let us talk about this feature film that is apparently very much on the cards.
Though Peaky Blinders has come to an end as far as the series is concerned, the story will continue on the big screen with the Peaky Blinders movie.
Apart from the film, which has been confirmed to be on the cards by Steven Knight, there could also be a spinoff series.
The production of the feature film is supposed to begin within the next few months. Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson are all set to reprise their roles as Thomas Shelby and Arthur Shelby in the film. So, all is not over yet.
Moreover, Knight has also teased the return of Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg in the franchise.
As far as the storyline is concerned, not much has been revealed about it. However, Knight said,
“I know what’s going to happen in those stories and it’s about a sort of untold story that happened in the Second World War, which Peakys are going to be involved in.”

Anyway, the good news is that this is not the end and we still have a lot to look forward to!

Netflix, under a deal with Weinstein Company and Endemol, acquired the rights to release the show in the United States and around the world. In January 2021, it was announced that the sixth series would be the last, followed by a spin-off film. The final series was broadcast in 2022.
