The Sinner has managed to capture attention since it first aired in 2017. The compelling crime drama ticks the correct boxes—a good detective, some suspense, thrill, and loads of crime. The fourth season is now available on Netflix.
But every journey has come to an end, and it seems like it’s time for us to say goodbye to Detective Ambrose for now. After the release of Season 4, fans have been wondering if The Sinner will return for a fifth season. But it seems like the answer is going to be disappointing.
The Sinner will not be returning for a fifth season. Season 4 has been officially confirmed to be the final season of the series.
Why was The Sinner canceled?
The Sinner Season 4 was recently made available on Netflix, which revived the discussion about the show’s early cancelation and no renewal. However, series creator Derek Simonds has explained that this had been the plan for quite some time. So, the show’s goodbye was not as unexpected as you think.
It’s been a huge pleasure and a privilege to be able to tell the kind of stories we have on The Sinner these past four seasons. Universal Content Productions and USA have been ideal partners and continually supportive of our creative goals, and I’m so pleased to complete Harry Ambrose’s dramatic series-long arc as we intended in this final season.
A huge thank you to my partner-in-crime, Bill Pullman, and to the talented actors, writers, directors, and crew who gave their all to help realize this show. It’s been an incredible journey.
In other words, The Sinner ended because the creator felt that it was the right time. Derek Simonds explained in an interview that he felt if the show would have continued for more seasons, they would have been in danger of repeating themselves.
In a way, Simonds’ decision makes sense. Constantly dragging a show not only makes it repetitive but also destroys its charm. It is better to put an end to it while it is still remembered fondly by the audience so that it does not leave a bitter aftertaste.
So, we can say that The Sinner was not exactly canceled, but reached its natural end. The story is finished and Detective Ambrose is done for now. However, who knows what could happen in the future?
Will there be a Season 5 of The Sinner?
As of writing this article, there has been no announcement of a potential Season 5. However, creator Derek Simonds mentioned that he would love to revisit the show sometime in the future.
The Sinner began slow when it first aired on USA Network. But when it premiered on Netflix with the Carrie Coon-led second season, it gained a lot of attraction. A larger fanbase also developed for the show. The show’s new-found popularity enabled the makers to renew it for Seasons 3 and 4.
The final season of the series premiered on USA Network in the States at the end of last year. But ahead of its release, the team had confirmed that Season 4 would be the last season. So, we’ve known the bad news for quite some time now.
If the makers were to change their mind or some other network were to take up Season 5, I guess it would have happened by now. It’s been an entire year now. But as I mentioned above, Simonds said that revisiting the series could be a fun experience.
I could definitely see revisiting the show. I think that would be a fun experience, after some time, to revisit the character.
I will say this: Right now, I don’t know what else to say with Ambrose. I feel like if there were more seasons consecutively following this one, we’d be in danger of repeating ourselves with diminishing returns.
But I love the idea of working with Bill again, and revisiting this world that I’ve lived in for the past five years and have really cherished, so I’m always open to that.
Derek Simonds
So, even if it is over for The Sinner as of now, something might definitely come up in the future. There could be a reunion, a possible spinoff, or even a special movie or an episode. Only time will tell!
About The Sinner
The Sinner is an American police procedural anthology television series developed by Derek Simonds for USA Network. It is named after Petra Hammesfahr’s 1999 novel, which served as the basis for the first season. Bill Pullman stars as a police detective who investigates crimes committed by unlikely culprits and attempts to uncover their motivations. Only Pullman appears in every season, while the rest of the cast mostly changes for each season’s story.
Originally intended as an eight-part miniseries, The Sinner premiered to critical acclaim and high ratings. The show’s success led to USA Network turning it into an anthology series, which aired for four seasons from August 2, 2017 to December 1, 2021.
