The Orville premiered on September 10, 2017, on the Fox network. It was initially negatively received, but the show revived itself in Seasons 2 and 3. And now, after the show’s Season 3 finale on August 4, 2022, fans are wondering if the show will continue and make a Season 4.
The Orville is a sci-fi comedy-drama following the crew of the USS Orville on their adventures set in space led by their captain Ed Mercer. Mercer is a Planetary Union officer in charge of the scape exploration vessels in the 25th century. The show is a parody and homage to the original Star Trek series and its Next Generation successor.
The show stars Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, Adrianne Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson, Penny Johnson Gerald as Doctor Claire Finn, Scott Grimes as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, Peter Macon as Lieutenant Commander Bortus, Halston Sage as Lieutenant Alara Kitan, and J. Lee as Lieutenant Commander John LaMarr.
The show has also hosted well-known guest stars, including Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Bruce Willis, Tim Russ, Rob Lowe, Tony Todd, and Dolly Parton.
The Fox network had not been keen on a second or third season after Season 1’s low opening, and thus The Orville began a new journey in Season 3 as a Hulu exclusive series. After Disney acquired Fox’s rights for movies and shows, the show in its entirety will be available on Disney+ from August 10, 2022.
Seth MacFarlane has spoken up about his interest in returning for Season 4. In an interview with ScreenRant, the actor admitted that the show coming back for Season 4 was a coin toss at this point, with a 50-50 chance for renewal.
There’s certainly hope from us, from Brannon Braga and myself and everyone involved with the show. We would all love to do a Season 4.
MacFarlane added that Hulu and Disney have both been extremely supportive of the show, and “it’s all up to the audience now” on how they receive the show and whether they want more.
I’ve sensed a real groundswell of support from within the Hulu and Disney branch. Of course, it’s a business, so the show has to be something that justifies its existence, and at the end of the day, that’s going to be what determines a Season 4. But the folks at Hulu and Disney have sure as hell given us the best possible chance of that happening, so it’s all up to the audience now.
Season 4 has not yet been greenlighted by Disney, but maybe a break might prove fruitful for the show. MacFarlane’s prior commitments to the Ted sequels and the show’s success after a gap in between can suggest a hiatus in the future with a Season 4 on the horizon.
