Why Chief of Staff Is Not Renewed for Season 3

With the increased interest in K-dramas, Netflix has been investing in numerous tales and stories from them. One of the best additions on the list was the show Chief of Staff. The show was an engaging political drama that starred Lee Jung Jae, known worldwide for his role in Squid Game.

Two seasons of the show have come out so far on Netflix. In fact, the second season premiered on the platform in 2019, before the pandemic. While it’s been two years since there’s been any news about the show’s renewals, fans still wonder if they’ll get to see Season 3 of Chief of Staff.

Chief of Staff hasn’t been renewed for a third season. However, it hasn’t been canceled, either. Netflix hasn’t announced any plans for the show, but there’s a high chance the TV series will not be renewed.

The audience and critics loved the first two seasons of Chief of Staff. The show truly made its mark in the genre with impeccable character performances and a gritty tale.

If you look at the end of Season 2, you’ll see that almost all arcs have been given closure. The storylines of characters such as Tae-joon and Do-kyeong were wrapped up pretty neatly. It almost seemed like it didn’t need another season storywise, as there were no loose threads remaining.

After Season 2 got over, it seemed like the cast members had bid adieu to the characters. For instance, in an interview with Soompi, Lee Jung Jae said:

“Thank you to the viewers who loved [the drama] for the long time of six months starting from Season one. I was happy acting as Jang Tae Joon, who challenged himself and changed during each episode.”

The interview headline also read that the cast said their goodbyes to the characters. All of this points to the fact that there won’t be another season of Chief of Staff.

Having said that, these days, reboots and renewals are happening in unexpected ways. Much of this is also dependent on how people over the internet react to the show or how many of them voice the need for a piece of content.

So, if the hype is truly worth it, Netflix might as well try to put together a fresh season for its fans. But the chances of that seem slim, considering that Netflix has been trying to scale back since its major loss of subscribers a couple of months ago.
