Netflix finally dropped the sequel to Murder Mystery last week, and while that wasn’t as great as the original, it was still a great blend of suspense, comedy, and action. But the film’s ending scene suggests that Audrey & Nick Spitz will soon have another dangerous mystery on their hands.
While Netflix has not confirmed a threequel since it’s far too early, James Vanderbilt and Jeremy Garelick have kept the sequel’s end open for a potential third instalment. In the final scene, the pilot pulls a gun on them, demanding they hand over the $3 million bag, and jumps out of the hovering helicopter after securing it, leaving the couple to crash.
The 2019 original also had a similar final scene, suggesting a sequel could pick off, but we never saw it play out in the 2023 film. If Netflix doesn’t make Murder Mystery 3, the scene will just be another loose end, waiting to be forgotten.
But here’s why fans of the Aniston-Sandler film series can hope to get a third film.
In an interview with ET, Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler stated their interest in sticking around for a third film, Sandler even going so far as to say he wanted to bring on Grown Ups 2 star Shaquille O’Neal.
The sequel’s ending scene leaves a perfect opportunity to pull a threequel where the danger is directly set upon the married investigative couple. Plus, despite “rotten” critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix’s viewers are clearly enjoying the film since the film is already on the top 10 list in over 90 countries.
The level of success that the original enjoyed, and the sequel will surely achieve can spell an excellent chance for the streaming service to greenlight Murder Mystery 3. And with two films down, the cast and production team of the film series can better understand what the audience wants from a potential threequel.
