Mr. and Mrs. Smith Info: Release Date, Cast, Plot and Latest Updates

The showrunner for Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith teased the possibility of the series getting a second season.

Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the new series follows two strangers assigned to be a newly married couple by a mysterious spy organization they both applied to work at. While they come to foster a deep connection, their relationship gets pretty rocky.

1. Will Mr. & Mrs. Smith Return for Season 2?

Even though Amazon Studios hasn’t officially announced a renewal yet, Season 2 is undoubtedly happening, given the hype and the positive reviews that poured in for Season 1. We have to wait for the official announcement.

While speaking exclusively with The Direct, Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane provided an update on a possible Season 2 of the new Amazon Studios show:

“We always wrote Season 1 as a complete film. We’re delighted with how we wrapped it up and the ending, even with the end being what it is.

That said, we have some fantastic, big ideas for Season 2. So, should the opportunity present itself, we will go down that road. And we will make it even more incredible than Season 1 if people will give us a chance.”

2. Is there a release date for Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s Season 2?

Since the second season hasn’t been officially greenlit, we don’t have a release date. However, we expect the show to go on floors by the end of 2024 and expect a potential release date of early 2026 since the makers would like to capitalize on the generated hype as early as possible.

3. Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2 Cast: Who’s returning, and are there any new characters?

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine would have to return, depending on how the events of the season 1 finale panned out.

Season 1 featured several celebrity cameos, including Alexander Skarsgård, Ron Perlman, Parker Posey, Mikaela Coel, Sarah Paulson, and Paul Dano. It’s unclear if some will return next season, though it would be exciting to see what other stars they could bring in.

Most importantly, Beverly Glover (Donald’s mom) could reprise her role as John’s mother. 

4. Upcoming Plot for Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2

The first thing a season 2 would have to do is give us a conclusion to season 1’s massive cliffhanger: Who survives and how? Besides that, it’s not hard to imagine how the show could get the lead couple back into the groove of missions. 

Maybe they took out the Smiths, who were sent to kill them, and then spent the season going after the organization that brought them together in the first place.

Or hey, it could be an anthology series that follows a different new couple every season. Who knows! Either way, there are plenty of options for what Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 could be if it happens.

5. A rundown of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 for the uninitiated!

The Prime Video series sees Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play the titular characters, a married couple who are both highly skilled assassins.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s season 1 finale sees the couple have an apocalyptic fight. John manages to subdue Jane long enough to inject her – and himself – with truth serum. This leads to their most raw, honest conversation yet, but they learn that they truly love each other, and that John didn’t kill Max.

That’s when the “Extremely High-Risk” Smiths return, revealing they’ve been hired to kill them.

The Smiths manage to flee to their safe room, but John is shot and wounded during the escape. Only having one bullet left herself, Jane opens the secure room door to face Posey’s Jane, who waits to strike outside.
