Now that Matrix Resurrections has lit up Christmas, it’s time to find out if there’s going to be a Matrix 5. Matrix Resurrections, which hit the theatres and began streaming on HBO Max recently, sets up a potential sequel.
For a franchise so popular with a loyal fanbase, it is only obvious to be wondering about a potential sequel, which we will call Matrix 5 for convenience.
As of writing this article, there has been no official confirmation about Matrix 5. So, we do not know whether we will be getting a sequel to Matrix Resurrections, as of now.
It depends on how Matrix Resurrections perform in the theatres, the availability of writers and most importantly, the pandemic situation. Warner Bros, Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and director Lana Wachowski are all silent about a potential sequel as of now.
But I am not losing hope, and neither should you, because you never know! Especially after watching Matrix Resurrections, I am expecting a sequel.
How Matrix Resurrections Sets the Stage For Matrix 5
You don’t even need to pay undivided attention to understand how the ending of Matrix Resurrections leaves room for a potential sequel. So, it is a no brainer that the makers wanted to keep their options open.
The majority of the film shows Neo focusing on getting Trinity out of the iteration of The Matrix. In the end scene, we see Neo and Trinity heading back to the Matrix to confront The Analyst since he created this new version of the Matrix.
The Analyst pays no heed and says “the sheeple aren’t going anywhere” to which Trinity and Neo tells him that they are going to rebuild the Matrix. Now this sounds like a good plan to focus a potential fifth movie on, don’t you think?
A fifth Matrix movie would be able to focus on their ideas and attempts to rebuild the Matrix and the challenges and obstacles they will face from The Analyst. So, Neo and Trinity’s decision to rebuild the Matrix itself sets up the stage for a potential sequel to Matrix Resurrections.
Apart from that, Smith’s case also seems pretty uncanny to me. Though he helps Neo save Trinity, one can never trust Smith. So he might become an ally, or be up for some trouble. He is still linked to Neo as in the original trilogy, so it is kind of confirmed that he is still in the picture.
I would say he will have a role to play in a potential sequel.
The fifth Matrix movie could also explore how the return of The One will affect the city of IO and whether Niobe will fight back Neo. There’s a lot left to be explored so there’s a good chance we will get Matrix 5, as far as material is concerned.
When Will Matrix 5 Release?
Since there has been no official announcement of a sequel to The Matrix: Resurrections being made, it is hard to predict when we might get the fifth Matrix movie.
But keeping in mind the interval in which the original trilogy of The Matrix released, I am sure we don’t have to wait for 18 years for another Matrix movie. Hopefully, the makers will begin working on Matrix 5 soon and we can expect an announcement.
Ann Sarnoff, Warner Media Chair and CEO did hint at a potential sequel to Matrix Resurrections, when she said, “Anytime Lana wants to make a movie, we’re all in.” We all must wait for director Lana Wachowski to come up with something super soon!
For your information, there is supposedly another Matrix movie in the making, though it is not the sequel to Matrix Resurrections. In October 2019, screenwriter Zak Penn had tweeted about this spin-off prequel which is set earlier in the Matrix universe.
But there has been no updates about this prequel since 2019 so it was probably shelved due to the pandemic. There’s no confirmation about whether this one is happening any longer or not either.
Which Cast Members Can Be Expected To Return for Matrix 5?
Since Neo and Trinity went on record to say they will be rebuilding the Matrix, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss can be expected to return for Matrix 5 because there would be no movie without them.
Keanu Reeves has remained tight-lipped about a potential sequel to Matrix Resurrections, but he did say that he would be up for it if Lana Wachowski wanted to cast him again.
If she wanted to do another story and wanted to include me I would be honoured and grateful, and I’d like to see what happens to Trinity and Neo, and the world.
Reeves
Other than that, a potential fifth Matrix movie would definitely star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Morpheus, Jonathan Groff’s Smith, Jessica Henwick’s Bugs and the iconic Neil Patrick Harris’s Analyst once again.
Other than that, we have to wait and see if a fifth Matrix movie is announced and which members of the cast are signed on.
