We all love a good spy thriller and The Man from U.N.C.L.E was a decent take on the popular genre. Ever since, fans have been wondering if the original plans of launching a franchise out of it was still on the cards.
The stylish spy drama, starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer was an ambitious project for sure and raised hopes to quite a level. It didn’t receive bad reviews per say. In fact, it got a lot of applaud from critics for its retro feels and vibes.
But you know, numbers. It did not do quite well in that department and knowing Hollywood, that is a pretty big problem. I am still not negating the possibility of a potential sequel, but just keep in mind that the first film was not a success, so chances may not be that high.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have a clear yes or no answer to whether at all there will be a sequel to the 2015 film. So franchise seems too far fetched an idea. But for your convenience, I have put together every update and more or less whatever we know of the prospects of a The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 happening (or not).
There is no official announcement of The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 happening anytime soon. The cast and crew do seem interested and a project has been on the cards, but considering the box office performance of the first movie, nothing can be said for sure at this point.
Is The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 happening?
Let’s see. We have fans, we have some good fan following on social media, we have good reviews for the first film and we also have enthusiastic members of the cast who want a sequel to happen!
In 2017, Armie Hammer in his statement to Slashfilm told that he did request Lionel Wilgram (the writer and producer of the movie) to write a sequel and Wigram did seem interested.
In 2018, Hammer told Collider that he and Wigram still brainstorm ideas and that the cast and crew would very much be on board if a sequel goes into production.
So that way, we aren’t the only ones sitting with hope. Besides, I won’t say the good reviews and the huge demand of fans for spy thrillers with the retro charm is for nothing. The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 crew could use this demand to their advantage as well.
But having said that, we really can’t say that it is happening. Hammer does seem quite interested and even considering the rest of the crew is, there has to be a script and more importantly, funding. Such a film will not be a low budget one, so that is there.
And trust me, I don’t think a Man from U.N.C.L.E is the first thing in mind for Warner Bros right now. So, what I mean is, these vague statements are not enough for us to hope that we will get something.
Is The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 not happening?
Armie Hammer and director Guy Ritchie might seem pretty enthusiastic about a sequel, but there’s a big question mark on plans of a sequel because of the box office numbers of the first film.
Let’s get this straight, it was not a hit. I mean it did not bomb badly, but it did not bring back the money that you expect a film of this stature to bring back. Making a stylish spy thriller is anything but cheap or low budget, so you can’t blame WB for thinking twice before investing into this project.
Besides, there is no concrete script on board either. With so much enthusiasm in the part of the cast and crew, you would expect some development in that sphere. All in all, we hardly have any concrete material to rely on.
Warner Bros have their hands full as of now and a sequel form The Man from U.N.C.L.E may not be one of the first things in their list either. So, even if it happens, I would say it will take time.
Final verdict: To be or not to be?
I know y’all are going crazy because I am simply throwing contradicting opinions on the matter till now. But trust me, there’s no information to base a proper yes or no around.
Anyways, based on what we know so far, there is no official confirmation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E 2 happening anytime soon. The cast and crew do seem excited, but Warner Bros have not yet laid hands on the project.
Having said that, the primary following of the film comes from social media and the film seems to have found its target audience on online streaming. So I think Netflix, Prime or any such platform could take it up.
Henry Cavill has made a name in the Netflix crowd thanks to The Witcher series, so maybe there’s hope of better response in that sphere rather than in theatres. With so many films taking to online platforms owing to the pandemic, this sort of wishful thinking is not unrealistic, is it?
Nevertheless, we can just wait as of now, and see if any official confirmation comes our way.
