Magic Mike 4 may or may not happen, but if it does, it will not focus on Channing Tatum’s Mike but on other characters. Director Steven Soderbergh has already confirmed that Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third film in the franchise, will be the last film featuring Mike.
At the end of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Mike leaves Florida to direct a stripper show in the West End of London. The film sets up several opportunities to explore in Magic Mike 4. The film questions the concept of class as it sends the working-class protagonist Mike to deal with the upper-class elite society in London’s West End.
However, there’s a big probability that Magic Mike 4, if at all it happens, will not feature Channing Tatum. Recent rumors also suggest that Tatum may be involved in new projects such as Deadpool 3, and the director himself has confirmed that Last Dance is indeed supposed to be Mike’s last dance.
However, Last Dance turns out to be paradoxical as a film. Though it intends to conclude Mike’s story, it opens up various new opportunities that can be explored in future projects in the franchise. But Mike’s story is not the only story worth exploring in the franchise.
In other words, though Last Dance is considered to be the end of Mike’s story, the franchise can continue. Soderbergh has also teased the making of several spin-offs set in the Magic Mike universe. Considering the ensemble cast which spans the three films, there are several characters whose stories can be explored via these spin-offs.
Another way in which the franchise could continue is through an origin story. Stephen Soderbergh also directed the first three films in the Oceans Eleven franchise, and now Margot Robbie is working on an Oceans Eleven prequel. Magic Mike could very well take the same route.
A prequel following how Mike Lane became a stripper in the 90s or one focusing on Dallas exploring male stripping in the 1980s could be the way to go. If Magic Mike 4 wants to shift its focus from Mike’s story, it could also focus on the new dance troupe after it debuts in the West End.
An all-female stripping movie such as the Hustlers could also be a part of the franchise, considering how important women empowerment becomes in the final act of Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Soderbergh has even mentioned that this could be a viable spin-off idea.
There’s a high chance of Magic Mike 4 dropping on HBO Max instead of in theaters, following the average box office scores and critical acclaim. This may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as directors get better creative freedom while working for streaming platforms.
All in all, though Magic Mike’s Last Dance was the end of Mike’s story, it could be the beginning of new stories for many other characters.
