Since How I Met Your Father season 2 is moving towards its end, it’s time to discuss the prospects of season 3! We’ve had almost two seasons and we still do not know much about the titular ‘father,’ so it’s not surprising for us to expect more.
As of writing this article, there has been no official announcement about a third season of How I Met Your Father. However, considering the main conflict in the series has not been resolved yet, and the popularity of the series, it is likely for the show to be renewed for season 3.
The series was supposed to be a long one from the beginning, as it is supposed to follow the same format as How I Met Your Mother, the original series of which HIMYF is a spin-off. HIMYM took nine seasons to reveal who the mother is.
Even if it does not take nine seasons for us to find out who the ‘father’ is in How I Met Your Father, the series is unlikely to end in 2 seasons.
1. How I Met Your Father Season 3 Potential Release Date
Given that Hulu will probably renew How I Met Your Father for a third season, it may premiere in January 2024. I am saying this based on the gap between season 1 and season 2.
As per recent reports by Variety , the show will also start airing on Freeform in a linear order. The telecast will begin from season 1. Previously, the series was available exclusively on Hulu, but the decision to air it on television vouches for the show’s growing popularity.
2. How I Met Your Father Season 3 Plot Details
It is a given that How I Met Your Father season 3 will continue Sophie’s quest to find true love in New York like her counterpart from How I Met Your Mother, Ted Mosby.
Season 2 might end on a cliffhanger, and my guess is that Jesse and Sophie will start dating. Season 3 will then focus on their relationship and the ups and downs. We’re not sure if Jesse is the father, but it is likely that he will be Sophie’s endgame.
Jesse and Sophie’s arc is very similar to Ted and Robin from HIMYM, and they began dating at the end of season 1. For Jesse and Sophie, too, season 1 ended on a cliffhanger.
But it is time for them to try out the idea of a serious relationship. It is evident that both have feelings for each other which they are suppressing. Moreover, at the end of one of the episodes, Val keeps a poem written by Jesse for Sophie in Pemberton’s lost and found box. Sophie is yet to discover that, and she eventually will in the series.
We also have much more to discover about who ends up with whom, how Sophie starts dating the ‘father’, and most importantly, the father’s identity. So, How I Met Your Father definitely cannot end so soon without giving us all these answers.
Season 3 can explore many more details, such as Val and Charlie’s issues, how Sophie decides to move forward in her career, Sid and Hannah’s marriage, Ellen’s endgame or even if Sophie and Ian ever get back together.
Let’s hope we get an official announcement of season 3 pretty soon. Until then, binge the first two seasons on Hulu and make your own theories.
3. Will Season 3 Feature Any Cameos of HIMYM Stars?
One big question that fans of HIMYF (and HIMYM) ask is whether we will have more cameos by characters from HIMYM. The finale of the first season had an unexpected cameo by Robin Scherbatsky, while season 2 featured a cameo by arguably the most popular character of HIMYM, Neil Patrik Harris’ Barney Stinson.
Reports suggest that Harris will have an extended role in the series, so we can expect him to make more appearances in the future. I don’t know about you, but as a fan, I will never be satisfied until all five gang members from HIMYM make appearances in the series.
We are yet to see Marshall, Lily, and our dearest Ted Evelyn Mosby appear in the series. So, if season 3 happens, I hope they all make their appearances together or individually. The actors of HIMYF have also hinted at more cameos in the future, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!
4. About How I Met Your Father
How I Met Your Father (HIMYF) is a spinoff series of the incredibly successful CBS show, How I Met Your Mother. The original show ran for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2014, quickly making its mark with a dedicated cult-like fanbase.
HIMYF was announced to start production in April 2021 with the Lizzy McGuire star Hilary Duff playing the lead called Sophie, narrating her journey to her children in the future.
The show’s flashbacks will start from Sophie and her close friends navigating love, life and struggles in the modern era of dating, paying bills and more, in 2021.
Created by writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger of This Is Us fame and directed by the original show’s director, Pamela Fryman, the first season of HIMYF is revealed to have 10 episodes. No further details have yet been released.
