Created by Sam Levinson, HBO’s teen drama Euphoria has already become the talk of the town. Even if you are not following the show, you most probably already know some of the characters.
After the much-discussed season 2 finale, we can surely expect some interesting stuff for season 3, especially since HBO Max had already renewed the show for a season 3, while season 2 was on. It is no longer news that Euphoria is one of HBO’s biggest hits.
Euphoria is confirmed to be returning for a season 3. However, HBO has not yet declared a release date. All things considered; we can expect Euphoria to return with another season in early 2023.
What happened in the season 2 finale of Euphoria?
The confounding finale gave us a lot of answers, but with that a lot of questions too, which helps set up season 3. To sum it up, the finale gave us more insight into the Cassie-Maddy drama, Rue’s recovery and Fezco not making it to Lexi’s play.
It does seem like Rue is in her journey of redemption– but there’s also a small hint that she might relapse. There is also the Jules-Rue moment which was deliberately kept open ended, to make way for season 3.
There was also the Cassie and Maddy drama. At the end of the episode, the two do not reconcile. Instead, Cassie tells Maddy that Nate broke up with her, to which Maddy replies that this is only the beginning.
We also get to know the real (and pretty heart-breaking) reason why Fezco could not be in Lexi’s play. He was shot in the gut by the policemen while trying to protect Ashtray.
All in all, it was a pretty eventful finale and also left us with a lot of scope to develop season 3 upon.
What to expect in Euphoria season 3?
First of all, Nate and Cassie’s relationship is hanging by the thread in the end of season 2. We can say the same for Cassie and Maddy’s relationship. In season 3, we can expect more from this love triangle, since Maddy clearly promised that ‘this is just the beginning’.
Although we do not get a clear idea of where Rue and Jules’ relationship is heading, the small moment in the season 2 finale gave us the hope that it is not over between these two. So, there might be more about Jules and Rue and their dynamic in season 3.
We should also get to see more of Jules and Elliot, who were sort of side-lined towards the end of season 2. After episode 6, we also did not see much of Kat and Ethan. If Kat at all returns for season 3, then there should be some development in that sphere as well.
There are also some other stray observations which maybe good plot points in season 3, such as Laurie the teacher turned drug dealer whom Rue owes money to and the camera we spotted in Samantha’s house.
So, all in all, we can expect to see much more about the fate of Rue, Jules, Lexi, Maddy, Cassie and Nate and how they deal with their interpersonal relationships. Euphoria has also been a show dealing heavily with substance abuse, so we can expect to see that continuing in season 3, especially with regard to Rue’s storyline.
Who is returning for Euphoria season 3?
HBO Max has not yet officially announced the cast for Euphoria season 3. However, we are pretty sure that most of the important characters from season 2 will be returning for season 3.
Zendaya will return as Rue, as confirmed by HBO executive, Casey Bloys. Dominic Fike will also be returning as Elliot, as confirmed by himself. There is also Jacob Elordi as Nate, Angus Cloud as Fez, Alexa Demie as Maddy and Sydney Sweeney as Cassie who are expected to return for season 3.
The only character whose return seems a little doubtful at this point is Kat Hernandez (Barbie Ferreira). Ferreira had reportedly walked out of the sets of Euphoria multiple times during season 2 due to creative differences with creator Sam Levinson. So, rumors suggest that she may not return for season 3.
Will season 3 be the last season of Euphoria?
It is too early to predict whether season 3 will be the ultimate season of Euphoria. But most probably, it won’t be. First of all, Euphoria is one of HBO’s biggest successes in the recent times. There is no reason why they would let go of it so early.
Secondly, with a stable fanbase, Euphoria has been one of the most discussed shows of the season. So, there is enough scope for the writers to continue the storyline and develop the characters more.
Having said that, it is true that Zendaya, who is arguably the face of the series, does have a lot of other projects in her plate to worry about, including the ambitious Dune 2. So, it is doubtful how much time she can assign to Euphoria in the coming years.
In that case, HBO has to consider bringing other characters to the forefront, which I guess they are partially doing considering the importance assigned to characters like Cassie, Maddy and Lexi this season.
It is good if Euphoria continues for a couple more seasons, but hopefully it does not go the Riverdale route and ruin every bit of its essence. As long as the writing is consistent, I guess it doesn’t harm for it to run a little longer.
