Will The Manga Leak Culture Come to a Halt with the End of MHA and JJK?

As we reach the conclusions of the many popular manga series, the way manga is shared and leaked is bound to change. Series like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia have been a huge part of the manga world for a long time, creating excitement and demand. With the void created by the conclusion of these Mangas, there might be fewer unauthorized leaks of new manga chapters.

This shift could affect how fans follow new series and how publishers work to protect their content. As we see these changes come about, let us analyze the nature of leaks, what brings about leaks, and the future prospects of leaks.

Why Do Leaks Happen?

Manga leaks are basically the unauthorized release of a portion or an entire chapter of a manga title before the official release date. They usually serve the purpose of satisfying fans who can’t wait for the official release of the manga.

Besides this reason, some manga companies purposefully leak a portion of their manga in order to hype their fans up. This, however, is a legal form of advertisement, unlike the other leaks, which is a huge crime.

The manga titles that get leaked the most lately are: One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Boruto, and many more. All these are immensely popular manga that have all received an anime adaptation.

How Do Manga Normally Get Leaked?

Although publishers desperately try to avoid leaks, they still happen through multiple outlets.

One way manga is leaked is when the leak is from the inside: someone directly involved with the manga/author/publishing company. Editors, publishers, translators, or anyone in between may be responsible for leaks.

It is important to note that these leaks may not be in the form of certain manga panels, as this may sometimes be difficult to obtain. A chapter may also be leaked once the leaker interprets the new chapter upon seeing it and uploads it online.

Besides this method, manga also have supply chain leaks. This happens when bookstores sometimes get the pre-release physical copies of certain manga. Corruption in places like these can cause leaks.

Lastly, manga are also leaked by fans who obtain the manga through unknown methods, translate them, and distribute them online.

Repercussions of Leaks

Leaks may be really convenient for fans who can’t wait for the manga release. However, it is quite the opposite for everyone involved in the creation of the manga. A leak can tarnish the value of the manga that was meant to be released on a particular date.

Leaks also negatively impact authors a lot, as it is heavily discouraging for authors to see their work lose its value. Another negative impact of leaks that people won’t normally think of is the fact that leaks can cause an internal struggle within a publishing company. A general distrust develops between mangaka, editors, and other staff.

An unpleasant work environment is far from what anyone involved in leaking manga desires to give our heroes, the mangaka. However, such is the end result of leaks.

What Can Fans Do?

As an individual fan, there isn’t much anyone can do to stop Leaks. The least any fan can do is to not consume any leaked content out of respect for our heroes: manga creators.

In reality most mangaka are really overworked and underappreciated. The bare minimum that a fan could do to support their favorite author is to respect them by enjoying their content once it is officially released.

Will The Leak Culture End?

The most realistic answer to this question is No. So long as popular manga like One Piece still go on, and as long as fans who crave to see what will happen next exist, leaks can never be truly stopped.

When Jujutsu Kaisen comes to an end, it can surely be said that one of the major leaks from Shonen Jump will cease. However, this trend is unlikely to end unless huge changes are made in the way manga publishing companies handle their content.
