How did the Hargreeves children lose their powers? Will they get them back?

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 ended with the universe resetting. In this new world, Reginald’s wife, Abigail, is alive, and Hargreeves Enterprises is now a flourishing business that has taken over the planet.

Even the heroes from the Umbrella Academy are now alive and well. But there’s a catch. None of them have their superpowers. So, how did they lose them, and will they get them back?

The Umbrella Academy superheroes lost their powers after they entered the Oblivion and helped Reginald reset the universe. They will most likely get these powers back in Season 4.

The reason behind the heroes losing their powers is still unclear. After all, Reginald was able to resurrect Luther, give Number Five his arm back, and do a whole lot more. There are two prominent theories behind this:

Reginald Might Have Taken Away the Powers

To begin with, Season 3 confirmed that the source of the superpowers in the Umbrella Academy was Reginald’s jar of lights. Every superhero carried a few light particles within them.

When Reginald was resetting the universe, he knew Abigail was coming back, and that his business would dominate the world. As a result, he would’ve found the powers of all superheroes unnecessary since he already has everything he wanted. After all, they were created for a purpose, and that purpose didn’t exist anymore.

Besides this, as we all know, the Umbrellas helped him voluntarily without knowing that their powers would cease to exist in the new universe. As a result, they all gave away their light particles to the Oblivion to enable it to reset the universe.

This is one way in which it could’ve transpired. Alternatively, Reginald taking away their powers and the heroes giving their light particles might be mutually exclusive, too.

The Umbrella Academy Might Get Their Powers Back

The last scene in Season 3 shows Ben Hargreeves traveling on a train to Seoul. While this doesn’t say much, it also shows that the new universe might be slightly different from the old one.

Furthermore, as we already know from Harlan and Viktor, superpowers can be acquired as long as the light particles within are transferred from one body to another. So, the possibility that Ben alone has superpowers seems a little improbable and, needless to say, scary.

However, this could be a key to the other heroes getting their powers back. While this is merely one theory, we all know how the show throws curveballs at us. So, perhaps we just have to wait for Season 4 to find out how exactly the Umbrellas get back what is theirs.
