The gothic romance drama that was The Essex Serpent has come to a close. With its marvelous performances and equally remarkable cinematography, the final episode put an end to many speculations including the existence of its titular serpent.
But one question that it hasn’t answered is whether or not there will be a Season 2.
Apple TV+ will not renew The Essex Serpent for Season 2. The series was adapted from Sarah Perry’s novel of the same name, and has covered the entire length of the story.
Now, Apple TV hasn’t made an official announcement but, in all likelihood, they won’t make one either. After all, the Essex Serpent is a miniseries, which by definition means that it is limited and won’t have a continuation via any sequels. The show did receive generally favorable reviews, but not enough to really warrant making S2.
Besides this, the show has adapted every single element and story arc from the novel and may not find any other source material to expand on.
Why will The Essex Serpent not have a Season 2?
As an adaptation, the series has left no cliffhangers or plotlines that a subsequent season can deal with. The biggest mystery was whether the Essex Serpent was real or not, and the show gave it a definite answer by showing us that it was a whale that was causing all the ruckus.
In contrast to the book, which leaves the fate of many characters, including Coral, Will, and Luke, content but ambiguous, the series has opted to give them happy endings as well.
- While Luke can no longer practice medicine, he gets a renowned position to teach it. He continues to stay close friends with Cora.
- Cora follows her passion for paleontology, while Will deals with the grief of losing his wife and the guilt of cheating on her. In the end, however, they reunite and it is implied that they will start a new life together.
The only definite ending that we don’t see is of Martha and her social housing bill. But that storyline may traverse into a different genre altogether.
Using Cora’s life, this is a story that dealt with how superstitions and puritanical religion continued to plague a period considered wholly modern, scientifically advanced, and the first chapter of women’s rights. The Essex Serpent finale provides a fitting conclusion to all of these themes.
