After watching AFC Richmond struggling to win matches and having way too many of them ending in ties for almost the entire second season of Ted Lasso, fans were very excited when they finally made it to the Premiere League in the season finale.
And with the two-time Emmy Award-winning comedy series returning for its third season on March 15, 2023, the question on everyone’s minds is: will they finally win the Premiere League Championship?
I personally think there is a good chance of them winning. This is mostly because Jason Sudeikis, who plays Ted Lasso and is an executive producer of the show himself, has revealed multiple times that the plan was to always have season 3 be the last one and I don’t think they would end the show on a low note.
But this isn’t the only reason I have. Read on to find out more.
1. Nate Shelly as the new Antagonist
At the end of season 2, we saw Nate accept the offer to become coach of West Ham United because he felt under-appreciated by the AFC Richmond Team and Ted Lasso in particular. It is also revealed that Rupert Mannion, Rebecca’s ex-husband, is now the owner of the same team.
This builds up the rivalry between AFC Richmond and West Ham United even further as both Rebecca and Ted now have “enemies” in the other team. It seems as though Nate is desperate to prove himself to Ted and Rupert wants to take the opportunity to put Rebecca’s team down.
We know Nate has gotten revengeful after the last season so he is definitely going to make it harder for Ted’s team to defeat his.
2. Set Up from the First Season
Ted Lasso has been optimistic about winning the Championship ever since he joined the team in the first season and he’s not going to give up until he achieves that goal. Along the way, he has helped the team work through so many of their issues and made them better players.
Although the series focuses on the character’s personal lives as well, the Premiere League Championship does play a major part in the plot.
Not only Ted but all the other people that are part of the team have been through a lot. It would be quite unfair to end the series with them losing the one thing they have all been working towards.
3. Maintaining the Tone of the Show
Ted Lasso may have some serious and emotional storylines; but at its heart, it is a comedy with mostly positive outcomes. Having the show end with the team being on the losing side would go against its tone, which is another reason why I believe the writers will avoid going in that direction.
This would also be the perfect opportunity to give Nate a redemption arc.
That being said, if West Ham United is the one to win the Premiere League Championship, there could still be a bright side. What would matter most are the important lessons and skills the team has learnt and how they’ve all grown together.
4. Is Season 3 still worth watching?
Yes, season 3 is definitely still worth watching. The outcome of the show might be obvious but as I have mentioned earlier as well, the show is about more than just football.
We have several storylines that delve into the characters’ personalities and backstories so I’d suggest you tune in to watch how they play out. The writers do a great job of making each episode very interesting.
5. Will there be a Season 4?
As of now, season 4 has not been confirmed yet. But I wouldn’t recommend holding on to the hope of another season because the showrunners have already said that they want the series to end after 3 seasons.
However, given the immense success of the show, it shouldn’t be too hard for them to get renewed, if they changed their minds.
6. About Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso is an American sports-comedy streaming TV series developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt. It’s based on a character of the same name that Sudeikis first portrayed in a series of promos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League.
It follows the life of Ted Lasso, a coach of college-level American football who is unexpectedly recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience at all in association football.
It stars Sudeikis as the titular character, Ted Lasso, joined by Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, and Sarah Niles among many others.
