Duffer Brothers Tease Stranger Things Finale and Potential Spinoffs

The Duffer brothers are ready to expand the world of Stranger Things even further and take things to the next level with possible new spinoffs.

Ross and Matt Duffer, the co-creators of the hit Netflix series, which can essentially be considered one of the streamer’s top titles of all time, spoke to SFX magazine about its future ahead of the much-anticipated release of the upcoming season later in May.

Stranger Things Season 4 is going to be massive, so it’s no wonder Netflix decided to split it into two volumes, which will be followed by its fifth and final season. Matt revealed that there’s still a lot to unpack with Seasons 4 and 5,

“Even with five, it’s going to feel like it’s ending a little early. We’re going to feel like we still have a lot more gas left in the tank. But I think that it’s better to end there with us wanting more. That’s why ending at five felt like the right move.”

The creators teased a bit about their plans for the show’s endgame and possibilities of future spinoffs, but they’re still secretive about the details. Matt stated,

“We haven’t told anyone our plans! Not even Netflix! We have some ideas. In terms of if we were to do any sort of a spinoff or any continuation of Stranger Things, for us, the bar was always, ‘Is the idea exciting enough that we feel the pull of wanting to do it again?’ I want to feel the pull of, ‘God, I really want to do this. I feel really, really excited about this.’ So that’s why we’re being careful about what that is and whether we move forward with it or not.”

It’d be interesting if they show the gang a few years later as they head to different colleges and begin living their own separate “stranger” stories as they move away from the curse of Hawkins. (The actors already look the part!)

However, Ross believes that even if it stems from something familiar, the spinoffs would need to have their own distinct voices,

“The key for us is that it needs to feel like its own distinct thing, not that we’re just retreading what we’ve already done, because what would be the point of that? I do think we have something that could be pretty exciting. So, we’ll see….”

Even if the spinoffs don’t take off into something bigger, the trailer for Season 4 definitely makes it look bigger than ever in terms of its storyline.

And if Season 4 builds a foundation for the final season, it’ll only get more intricate, leading up to the grandest of finales.

It’s darker, scarier, nightmare-inducing, and has more of the Upside Down… what could possibly go wrong?

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 1 premieres on May 27, followed by Volume 2 on July 1.
