Yes, Sex Education Season 4 Will be its Final Season, And Rightly So

Sex Education season 4 has premiered on Netflix this week, but there’s a bittersweet feeling we all have going on. As described by Netflix on X, Sex Education is in its “climax” era, as season 4 is going to be its final season.

Netflix has confirmed that Sex Education season 4 will be its last and final season. The series will not be returning for another season.

However, I would not say the show has been canceled. Rather, it has come to an end when it should, instead of dragging the series for the sake of it. In fact, after the way season 3 ended, we all saw it coming that the series is heading towards a natural end.

Many Actors Have Left the Sex Education Cast 

There are a couple of reasons why Sex Education is coming to an end at this point. The first and most important one is that many cast members are moving on and have left the show.

Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric in the series, has signed other projects and will not be available for new seasons. Similarly, Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley, is focusing on other projects and mentioned in many interviews that she will be moving on from Sex Education.

Without characters like Maeve and Eric, the show will lose much of its charm, so it will be difficult for fans to relate to the series in the same way. Apart from Maeve and Eric, other actors such as Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison, Tanya Reynolds, Rakhee Thakra have also left the show.

Without the characters who made the show as popular as it is, it does not seem right to continue it further. Even if we look beyond other characters, the series will not feel the same without Ncuti Gatwa as Eric Effiong and Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley. Both of them have confirmed that they will not be part of the series beyond season 4.

It is Time for Sex Education to Come to an End

Apart from cast members leaving the series, it is also about time the series ends. The makers have promised that all the important characters, such as Otis, Maeve, Eric, and Ruby, will get the endings they deserve. Moreover, the students are also heading towards the end of school life. So, this is the perfect time for the show to end.

It doesn’t make sense to continue a series just for the sake of it. We’ve seen multiple examples of networks forcefully continuing a series and only ruining its legacy. It’s actually good that Sex Education is not taking that route.

Creator Laurie Nunn was not sure of the show ending with season 4 during the scripting process. However, while working on it, she realized it was about time to say goodbye.

It’s the end as we know it. During that process (of scriptwriting), it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end; the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it. I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time.”

At the end of Sex Education season 4, Maeve decides to move to the U.S. to continue her education, even after going through a major personal tragedy. Otis, too, finds himself in a good place, while Eric makes a difficult decision about his struggles with religion. I will not elaborate more on the ending to avoid giving spoilers, but every character settles down in a certain way.

Therefore, Sex Education ends as the creator has finished telling all that she wanted to through her characters, and it is about time for them to say goodbye.
