The PlayStation Showcase event on 9th September 2021 attracted enormous attention with the premier of God of War Ragnarok’s trailer.
The storyline dictates that Kratos and Atreus navigate through the nine realms on the lookout for answers about Loki’s truth and attempt to prevent the prophesized end of Asgard, Ragnarok.
God of War Ragnarok is ready to have a group of characters as large as the nine realms. Many of them will be recognizable by the players, while some will be essential to the Norse fundamentals of Ragnarok.
Santa Monica Studios’ posted character arts of figures who didn’t feature in the trailer on their Twitter account, confirming some characters.
The ending scene of God of War 4 confirmed the appearance of Thor in the sequel, God of War Ragnarok. Moreover, the director dropped major hints towards Odin’s arrival at the Showcase event.
Thor as the Primary Antagonist in Ragnarok
Atreus’ vision at the end of God of War 4 teases the appearance of Thor while the God of War Ragnarok gameplay trailer confirms his presence in it.
In God of War 4, Kratos killed Thor’s half-brother Baldur, the god of light. He also murdered Magni and Modi, who happen to be Thor’s sons. As a result, Thor is back to avenge their deaths.
However, he’ll not appear as a friendly character. He’ll take over as the primary antagonist of the story. His physical representation will also be different, meaning he’ll have a bulky figure rather than the muscular one you see in the comic. Besides, a dense beard will cover his mouth in the fifth installment.
When the creators of the game first introduced this, players of the franchise were taken aback. Nonetheless, the creators soon confirmed that this depiction of Thor is closer to the one in Norse mythology.
Odin’s Appearance in Ragnarok
The God of War Ragnarok gameplay trailer also confirms the physical presence of the villainous Allfather, Odin. In the Showcase post-event, the director of the franchise, Eric Williams, further supported the appearance of Odin.
He went on record to describe Odin’s role in the game as:
An old man who’s just kinda busy with his own things and doing whatever he wants.
Eric Williams
Additionally, the Santa Monica Studio Twitter page posted a short clip with a tweet that read:
Odin’s got tricks up his sleeves we haven’t dared to discover.
Santa Monica Twitter
Unfortunately, how Odin will factor into the story is still a mystery. In Norse mythology, the snake Fenrir engulfs Odin, and interestingly, Santa Monica Studio isn’t scared to adapt the mythology.
With the game’s release, we’ll get to know how Odin dies, if at all he does.
The Storyline of God of War Ragnarok
The developers of God of War Ragnarok drop hints which indicate that it will be an apter adaptation of Norse mythology than the rest of the series.
The game’s narrative follows Kratos and Atreus on a mission to learn about Loki and stop Ragnarok. The Norse pantheon meets them with hostility to exact revenge from Kratos for killing Baldur and prevent Ragnarok by killing Atreus.
Nevertheless, Atreus believes they can prevent Ragnarok through war, while Kratos wants to avoid a new battle against the mighty gods.
As the trailer suggests, Kratos and Atreus initially set out to seek Tyr, the Norse god of war, an already dead character in the game.
In the Showcase event, Eric Williams confirmed that the game follows the mythological fundamentals and Ragnarok will inevitably occur by saying:
You can’t call the game God of War Ragnarok and not have Ragnarok happen in the game, so it’s gonna happen.
Eric Williams
According to the latest releases about the game, Midgard will face the hit by the freezing winds of Fimbulwinter, and players will be able to visit all the nine realms, including Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard.
God of War Ragnarok will initially be available only on PS4 and PS5 while its release date is yet to be decided.
