Ever since its premiere in December, the Netflix original series, Bridgerton, has received a lot of fanfare. The Gossip Girl-meets-Jane Austen series has served the viewers with generous doses of Regency Era frivolities and sizzling romance, making it the perfect show to binge during the holidays. Fans have been longing for more seasons of Bridgerton but, thus far, it is bad news for them.
Netflix has not renewed the show for a second season yet. With the coronavirus pandemic hampering all productions of film and television, the streaming service has been very picky about the shows it renews. Period dramas, especially, are very difficult to film in times like these since they require elaborate sets and a longer schedule of shooting.
Nonetheless, seeing how popular the first season became, the chances are that Netflix will renew Bridgerton. Here are four more reasons why there should be more seasons:
1. Regé-Jean Page
Page is undoubtedly the biggest star of the show after the first season. The internet has been swooning over the actor and his stoic portrayal of Duke of Hastings has convinced many fans that he would be the perfect Bond.
His chemistry with Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne Bridgerton in the first season, has been one of the talking points of the show. Although their story is, essentially, over, fans would love to see them back in another season. Maybe a side story showing how they are handling married life?
2. So Many Unanswered Questions
For most of the first season, Eloise Bridgerton was desperate to find out the identity of the mysterious Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews), who had been writing scandal sheets about the new debutantes of the social season. Her best friend, Penelope Featherington, had been ‘helping’ her investigate the matter.
However, in the season finale, it was revealed to the viewers that Penelope herself, was Lady Whistledown. Will Eloise be able to forgive her best friend for keeping this a secret? If there is a second season, Eloise and Penelope’s friendship will be one of the biggest story arcs.
Other than the big reveal, the finale teased a new Lord Featherington. After the murder of her husband, Lady Featherington (Polly Walker) receives a letter announcing the arrival of another Featherington. Since Regency Era laws did not allow women to inherit property, the new Featherington will be Lord. How will he add to the drama of the equation?
3. Other Bridgerton Siblings
Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance books. There are nine books in the Bridgerton book series, out of which, the first seven revolve around each Bridgerton sibling’s love story. The first season of the show has already established a few favorite siblings in the family, and fans are waiting for their favorite love story.
The end of the first season hinted that the next season will focus on the borderline hostile Viscount Bridgerton, Anthony. Hopefully, we get to see Colin’s story with Penelope!
4. The Cast Wants to Return
Of all the reasons, this one is the most hopeful. Often, the cast of hit shows leaves after the initial success, wishing to leave the franchise before people lose interest in it. However, multiple Bridgerton cast members have said that they would readily return to the show to showcase their characters’ journeys.
Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope in the show, has said in an interview with Radio Times that there is much left to explore with her character-
“I’d love to go on that journey with her, to see how she’s changed.” I’d really love to come back because I feel like we’ve just scratched the surface.”I feel like we’ve established this big world so I’d love to explore more of it.”

Regé-Jean Page too has stated that he is interested in coming back to the show. In an interview with Oprah Magazine, he said,
“I think there are a lot of good stories to be told in this world. There’s a plethora of characters and each of those characters has cousins, uncles, and dogs, and I think people enjoy exploring all of those depths and nooks and crannies.”

Even Queen Charlotte has said that the show has a lot of potential for a second season and she wants to focus on one storyline if the show gets renewed. Golda Roshuevel has said,
“If [creator] Chris Van Dusen comes to me and says, ‘Golda, what would you like to see in the second season if we have a second season?’ I would say, ‘The Queen and Eloise have to get together and form an alliance and find out who Whistledown is.'”

All signs point to the show getting a second season! What do you think? Should Bridgerton be renewed? Which sibling’s story are you most looking forward to?
