Peacemaker is getting crazier with each episode, and the show seems to be at a point from where the story can go in any direction. Episode 5 ended on a cliffhanger without revealing if Adebayo is dead or alive, and the suspense set up the next episode just perfectly. Here’s a brief recap of the episode:
After a seemingly successful mission of Task Force X, the team calls it a night, but Adebayo returns to the headquarters. This is because she feels guilty about getting close to Peacemaker while also planting the diary in his trailer, thus betraying his trust.
She plays with Peacemaker’s X-Ray vision helmet at the headquarters and finds out that Murn is a Butterfly. Almost instantly, Murn realizes it, runs behind her, and tackles her to the ground just outside the office. He disarms her with ease, and the last thing we see is a shocked Adebayo staring death in its face.
So, did Murn kill Adebayo? Is Adebayo dead or alive?
Adebayo is likely alive in Peacemaker. In IMDB, Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo) is listed as one of the main cast members who will appear in all 8 episodes. So, we will be seeing more of her in the subsequent episodes.
However, I have multiple theories about how she might escape her death. Let me walk you through them and perhaps paint a possible picture of how things might turn out.
1. Theory 1: Peacemaker Saves Adebayo
Peacemaker left his helmet at the headquarters, so there is a chance that he will come back to collect it. We know he’s obsessed with his helmet and might decide to retrieve it in the middle of the night instead of waiting till the following day when he returns to work. This might coincide with Adebayo’s fiasco. He could be there just in time to see Murn going for the kill and save her.
However, I feel this wouldn’t be possible because Peacemaker just had a great day massacring butterflies, blowing up one of their headquarters (for the lack of a better phrase), and celebrating this success with Adebayo. It seems like he is done for the day and will have a good night’s sleep.
2. Theory 2: Harcourt Saves Adebayo
If you noticed, before dispersing from the headquarters with the other crew members, Harcourt looks suspiciously at Murn. This could mean that she either knows his secret or, at the very least, suspects that he is a Butterfly.
So Harcourt might go back to the headquarters to confront Murn, arrive just in time to see Murn in his true colors, confirm he is a Butterfly, and somehow save Adebayo.
However, even this doesn’t seem possible because Harcourt is a discrete and non-confrontational agent. So her going straight to Murn and having a face-off is highly unlikely. Furthermore, we see her at a bar triumphantly smiling as she creates a group with the team members and sends a celebratory picture. This means even Harcourt is calling it a night.
3. Theory 3: Adebayo Saves Herself
As Amanda Waller once mentioned, Adebayo is a naturally gifted spy. There are multiple ways she can manipulate Murn and convince him to keep her alive. One way would be to reveal that she’s Amanda’s eyes and ears on the mission. She could use this as leverage and keep herself alive because Murn doesn’t want Amanda looking into why a team member she keeps in constant touch with is suddenly not responding.
While these are the three major theories, there’s something else we might be missing. We still don’t know Murn’s actual role on this mission, which can flip the complete story.
4. Is Murn a Good Guy or a Bad Guy?
After Murn is revealed as a Butterfly, I was left wondering if he’s a good guy or a bad guy and what his true intentions are.
Yes, once again, I’ve got multiple hypotheses. Sit back and enjoy because I’m sure these theories would feed your curiosity.
Theory 1: Murn Is the Bad Guy
At the beginning of Episode 5, Murn says that the Butterflies are everywhere. They’ve infiltrated the highest ranks of the government as well. This means Murn could be an insider for the Butterflies to ensure that not much harm is done.
However, he wasn’t hesitant to kill Senator Goff and his entire family. He further let the Task Force burst into one of the headquarters, blow it apart, and find the Butterflies’ food source. He could’ve prevented them if he wanted to by merely pointing in another direction which would lead nowhere. This brings me to my second theory.
Theory 2: Murn is the Good Guy
Murn somehow found a way to be more like himself instead of being entirely possessed by the Butterflies. In an earlier episode, he tells Economus how he’s regretted his actions in the past and is now trying to do some good.
Furthermore, Locke mentions Murn’s past in the Nyasir forest, and Murn insists that he is a different person now. This mission of bringing down the vicious Butterflies and the mastermind behind them could be his way of doing some good.
This means that when he chases Adebayo, it’s not to kill her but to reveal the truth before she discloses his secret. It also means that only Adebayo will have the larger picture, and once again, she’ll be a bearer of secrets that make her more anxious and guilty.
But I also have a third theory, which is quite similar to Suicide Squad’s trope.
Theory 3: Murn Is a Bad Guy and Is being Used by Amanda
Amanda Waller knows Murn is a Butterfly, and she’s using his past as leverage against him to work for her and bring down the other Butterflies. This has been Amanda Waller’s way of doing things and could very well be the case in this scenario as well.
5. Conclusion
These are a few theories and speculations around what could happen. However, the only thing I can safely say is that Adebayo will be alive in the upcoming episodes since she’s already been established as a pivotal character and thus won’t be killed off so abruptly.
