Marvel’s ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ Is Not a Part of MCU Canon, Confirms Showrunner

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. will not be included in the franchise’s cinematic universe, and neither is it a part of the current Phase Four slate.

The series, which is set to debut on streaming service Hulu on May 21, was created by Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, with the former providing his voice for the titular character.

In an interview with Comic Book earlier this month, Blum addressed questions regarding the series’ continuity with the producer, stating that it is part of a brand-new universe altogether.

The showrunner also revealed that he got to select the numbering of the universe, which he chose to signify his son’s birthday.

Check out his full statement below:

Yeah, we’re our own universe. I think like, you know, Harley Quinn is a good example of this, that’s not the movies, but it’s really cool actually. Marvel has like a database of all the universes in the multiverse, and there’s a guy who runs it, and they let me pick the numbering of our universe. My son’s birthday, 12/26, is our universe, so we were in the Marvel Multiverse, which is awesome.

Thus, M.O.D.O.K. exists on Earth-1226, which is quite far from the MCU’s Earth-199999. But given this news, it can be expected that some fans might be disappointed that M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing) will not get to interact with beloved Marvel characters like Iron Man or Captain America.

But in a more recent interview with Inverse, Blum stated:

“We are canonically part of the Marvel multiverse, and it’s up to them if they want to bridge us or not.”

This can then be taken as a hopeful reassurance that Oswalt’s M.O.D.O.K. may find its way into the MCU in the near future. But until then, it shall remain detached from the main universe.

However, this departure might fare the upcoming series well by adopting a separate style from the other Phase Four shows. Furthermore, adult animation is comparatively new ground in the studio’s modern era as it lets the creators experiment with one of Marvel’s most ridiculous characters.

The series will revolve around M.O.D.O.K.’s struggles, managing his professional and personal life after his company A.I.M is acquired by a more prominent conglomerate while dealing with his failing marriage to Jodie (Aimee Garcia).

In the comics, M.O.D.O.K. plays a supervillain to many Marvel heroes, including the X-Men and even the Avengers.

The new series, though, aims to put a comedic twist to the character’s narrative by seeing him experience a midlife crisis while continuing his reign as an antagonist.

Back in March, it was announced actors Jon Hamm and Nathan Filion would be joining the cast in the roles of Iron Man and Wonder Man, respectively.

Other cast members include Ben Schwartz as Lou, M.O.D.O.K.’s socially awkward son, Melissa Fumero as his popular daughter, and Beck Bennett will play M.O.D.O.K.’s new boss, Austin Van Der Sleet.

Now, with less than a week to go until the series’ release, here’s hoping Oswalt’s show will offer a different yet interesting look at a Marvel villian.
