House of the Dragon May Have a Guaranteed Season 2 Renewal

We’re set to enter the world of fire, blood, and dragons very soon, but in a whole new avatar. Where in GoT, the Targaryens were scarce, in House of the Dragon, they are prouder and mightier than ever… which sadly may also contribute to their eventual downfall.

Such a tale cannot be told in just one season and many fans are already curious about the fate of HOTD S2. In a time when so many shows are getting canned after one season, will HOTD be able to secure a S2 renewal?

While HBO has made no official statements yet, House of the Dragon is mostly likely to get renewed for S2 which may air in mid-2023.

Now creator Ryan J. Condal imagined the whole House of the Dragon saga to be five seasons long. While the first few may portray the Dance of the Dragons arc, there is plenty of other Targaryen material to continue to the remaining seasons.

Earlier in the year, HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys had disclosed that shows typically share their future season plans with the network, and HOTD was no different. This ensures that if the show needs to pick up production quickly, it can do so without any obstacles.

Right now, all that’s standing between HOTD and its S2 renewal is viewership ratings. The good news for the show is that they don’t have to be as great as GoT was at its pinnacle. They just need to show that enough people are interested in it.

When will HOTD S2 air?

Redanian Intelligence states that their sources have confirmed that production for S2 of HOTD may have already started—quite ahead of the S1 premiere on Aug 21. But even if filming does end in a few months, post-production will certainly take time.

Plus, the studio will also wait to assess the fan response to S1. So in any case, it will take at least a year for the show to return. Thus, we can expect House of the Dragon S2 to air sometime during mid-2023.

It may follow suit and continue to have10-episodes, with most of the main cast (whose characters aren’t dead or lost yet—I’m looking at you Gendry) returning.

House of the Dragon S2 Plot

While the show is majorly about the Targaryen civil war, S1 won’t just jump into it. The ten episodes start right from when Rhaenyra is a child promised to be the next heir of the Iron Throne.

We’re going to see the different stages of her life growing up and all the schemes being hatched to pull the rug beneath her feet. The final betrayal that leads to the Dance of the Dragons may only happen in Ep 9 or 10.

This means that we may enter S2 in the heat of the war. The battle between Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon II will begin in earnest, resulting in men sparring against men and dragons slaying dragons.

Events such as the Assault on Harrenhal, Butcher’s Ball, and Fall of Dragonstone may be depicted in S2.
