Squid Game Creator Announces Season 2, Promising Gi-Hun’s Return

Creator/director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that he is currently working on season 2’s story while talking to the Associated Press at a screening and Q&A in Los Angeles for the Korean drama.

Even if the story is in very early stages, the director has assured fans that Lee Jung-jae will indeed return as Seong Gi-hun in season 2.

The Associated Press posted the clip on Twitter with translated subtitles for Hwang’s statement,

So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!

But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this… [in English] Gi-hun will come back, he’ll do something for the world.

The director had previously teased that he could possibly explore more about plotlines like the detective’s fate and his relationship with his brother, The Frontman, or the story of the recruiter who plays Ddakji with the players.

So Squid Game season one definitely has some open endings that could/would be explored in season 2. Although, I believe it would be better for the show’s quality to end it after season 2 with all these loose ends tied for good instead of milking it dry.

(Look what happened to La Casa De Papel/Money Heist.)

A spokesperson for Netflix told NBC News ‘a second season is in discussions but has not yet been finalized.’ But keep in mind, if the director is up for it, it’s always a positive sign.

After its premiere on Netflix on September 17, Squid Game quickly garnered a lot of fans and almost felt like it had exploded onto everyone’s screens in no time.
