Pluton, one of One Piece’s 3 legendary Ancient Weapons, is the gigantic, super advanced warship, capable of sinking islands. This potential weapon of mass destruction has not appeared physically yet, but we can be 90% sure that it is somewhere in Alabasta – or under it.
It was constructed sometime during the Void Century, some 900 years before the current storyline. When Pluton was first revealed, we were told that it was built in Water 7, the city of shipwrights, in Paradise.
It’s clear a shipwright with extraordinary abilities helped build the original ship, but we have no clue who it could be. Is there a possibility that one of our current genius shipwrights can redesign Pluton?
Will Franky Build Pluton? Is the Sunny Pluton?
Franky will not build Pluton because it already exists. There is a possibility that Franky has incorporated some elements from Pluton into the design of the Straw Hats’ ship – the Thousand Sunny, using the blueprints of Pluton given to him by Tom.
The blueprints of Pluton were preserved and passed down as a countermeasure: If Pluton fell into the hands of evil, the shipwrights needed to be sure that they could build another ship that could take on the original.
It’s a popular head-canon that Franky has already built Pluton, in the form of the Sunny. Since he is half cyborg, there’s a possibility that Franky memorized the blueprints before he destroyed them in chapter 399.
If this is true, he could, consciously or subconsciously be adding features from Pluton into the Thousand Sunny.
The Sunny is one of the most powerful ships in One Piece history, and the most technologically advanced. Franky used Adam’s wood, the strongest kind of wood in existence, to make the ship, and has been adding several cool features to the ship along the years.
What if the Sunny is just one massive step away from becoming the island-vaporizing Pluton?
From the Going Merry incident, I’m sure that Oda wants us to think of the ships as one of the Luffy’s nakama. And everyone else is getting stronger, it’s possible that Thousand Sunny will too.
In my previous article about the Ancient Weapons, I theorized that Oda might be leading up to a Ship of Theseus kind of argument with Pluton and the Sunny. It goes something like this: Franky builds a model of Pluton in the form of the Sunny.
He uses all of the features and construction designs mentioned, in the same way that they are mentioned in the blueprint. By the end of it, he ends up with a copy so like the original, that it becomes the original itself.
The only problem with this is, it’s Franky we’re talking about here. Yes, it’s been his dream to make the Ultimate Ship, and by the sound of it, nothing is more ultimate than an Ancient Weapon, the ship called Pluton.
But it just simply doesn’t make sense that a character like Franky would copy someone else’s work to make his dream ship. As we know, Franky is a helluva shipwright; he is more than capable of making his own Ultimate Ship. His final project has to be based on his own merit.
The only way that the Sunny-Pluton argument makes sense, is if Franky used Pluton’s blueprints to make the Sunny into Pluton 2.0.
Franky rebuilt his own body with the use of Vegapunk’s technology, so I could see him taking ideas from Pluton’s design – like any other artist or creator – and remolding it into something new.
1. Does Franky Destroy the Pluton Blueprints?
Technically, Franky destroys the blueprints that were created to make a “counter Pluton”, capable of stopping the original Pluton, which could be used to level the planet.
He realizes that Robin had no intention of disclosing the location of Pluton that she found through the Alabasta Poneglyph. When Spandam demands for the blueprints, Franky sets them on fire.
With this we know that any information about the Pluton, past or future, ends with Robin and Franky. Robin knows the original location of Pluton, while Franky knows of its design.
2. Will Luffy get Pluton?
Luffy will control Pluton. Luffy already has Shirahoshi, the current incarnation of Poseidon, by his side. And he will be the wielder of all 3 Ancient Weapons as the Pirate King.
Pluton is meant to be at least as powerful as Poseidon, the Mermaid Princess who can command the Sea Kings. The theories about the enigmatic Uranus also suggest that it will either be in the form of a person, or something sub-human, like a conscient Devil Fruit.
Poseidon is the weapon of the sea, Uranus, the weapon of the sky. It only makes sense, that Pluton be a weapon of the earth. So how can Pluton be a ship?
With all the Hades/Pluton/Underworld connotations, there’s a chance that Pluton is a kind of underground machine, perhaps a giant drill, or some kind of vehicle that can move under the surface of the earth.
If we want to stick to Pluton being a ship, it should at least be a submarine.
I think we may be seeing a theme here – maybe the Ancient Weapons aren’t what they seem. Nobody expected Poseidon to be a living being instead of an inanimate object. Poseidon is an inheritable trait – Shirahoshi is neither the first nor the last user of Poseidon.
Similarly, Pluton might not even be a tangible person or thing – maybe there is no original Pluton, maybe the power of Pluton is transferrable.
If that is the case, the Straw Hats’ Sunny could well become Pluton. Perhaps Uranus too has something to do with inheritance (inherited will; will of D.?) and Dragon will pass on Uranus to Luffy.
But coming back to Pluton, if the Sunny is at all related to Pluton, it’s obvious that Luffy and Franky will control it.
