When DCEU is pitted against the MCU, the latter always wins because of how cohesive it is. Now after several attempts at streamlining its projects, the DCEU has decided to start with an absolutely fresh slate and have a complete reset of the universe.
It’s exactly what you think it means — All the films so far will be void! The DCEU will begin with both a new timeline and storyline. In fact, we may see new versions of our beloved superheroes as well, whether we like or not!
So if you’re looking forward to the upcoming DCEU movies like Shazam 2, you might wonder if there’s any point to watching it at all?
With the DCEU completely resetting, the continuity in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be rendered useless as any sequel film is expected to be scrapped. It may become a box office failure, because fans may think there’s no reason to watch the film.
Sadly, although the DCEU reset is much needed, it is not a win-win situation at all. But still, let’s look at the bright side of the situation along with evaluating what consequences Shazam 2 will face.
Should you watch Shazam 2?
If you’re a fan of Shazam!, then you should definitely watch Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film is expected to have a good story that lives up to the expectations of the first film’s hilarious, witty feel-good vibe.
Even if the DCEU gets completely reset, you can still enjoy Shazam as a standalone film that has great entertainment, narrative, and production value.
However, one must stay aware that the events depicted in Shazam 2 may not have any consequence for the new DCEU. As such, some fans may prefer skipping the film as it won’t connect to future DCEU projects.
The Positives
On top of our positives list is that the reset will benefit the whole franchise as the fresh start under James Gun and Peter Safron may bring in the right amount of intensive planning needed to spearhead DCEU in the right direction.
As for Shazam 2 itself, the news of the reset was met with announcements of reshooting. So for one, we can be assured that the film will end without leaving us hanging for more — There’s nothing worse than an incomplete sequel!
Reshoots could also mean that we can enjoy Shazam 2 as more of a standalone film, the art of which is often lost in mega franchises like the DCEU and MCU which focus too much on continuity.
The good thing here is that this is only the second film (as opposed to being the third or fourth film in a franchise), which means it is still low-stakes and the property as a whole, won’t lose any traction.
The Negatives
Sadly, the negatives totally outweigh the positives — first and foremost, many fans may decide not to watch Shazam 2 in theatres and waste money on a film that won’t have any consequence in the greater scheme of DCEU logistics.
Plus, Shazam’s hype has now died now, as the reset implies that no more Shazam films will be made. Fans who still want to watch Shazam 2 could even easily opt to watch it on HBO Max instead, knowing that watching on priority isn’t required anymore. In such a case, Shazam 2 is unfortunately fated to be a box office failure.
A total reset has another downside as well – Not all DCEU properties failed badly enough to be completely wiped out. Shazam is a great example of a property that could’ve continued prospering if given a chance.
Many fans are hoping that the silver lining in the situation is that hopefully, the DCEU isn’t fully reset and that properties like Shazam can still be given a second chance and a spot in the new universe. But only time will tell!
