Chris Evans has long been synonymous with Steve Rogers aka Captain America. And even though the news isn’t confirmed at all, the rumor mill has been abuzz, with the fans being more than hopeful to see Chris reprise his role as Captain America.
But fans can’t be blamed if the rumors are started by one of the most reliable entertainment news sites. Ever since Deadline talked about Chris returning as Captain America, several theories and possibilities have been floating around online, with talks of everything from whether or not Chris will be back as Cap to how he would return.
Most likely, he might show up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which remains to be seen once the new episodes come out. Read on to find out!
1. The Rumors
It was January 14, 2021, that Deadline broke the news of Chris Evans returning as Captain America. This very understandably psyched the fans out, because nostalgia is what drives superhero franchise fans. Here’s word-for-word what Deadline reported:
“It’s still vague whether the deal is closed, but insiders say it’s headed in that direction for Evans to return as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in at least one Marvel property, with the door open for a second film.”
But then again, the catch here is that Chris can return as Steve Rogers and not using the shield as Captain America. Since Chris publicly stated that he will not be returning as Captain America, we can rest assured that there will most probably not be another standalone movie.
But he might appear in cameos like Robert Downey Jr. did as Tony Stark after Iron Man 3.
2. “News to Me”
While the rumor mill loves to churn one interesting story after another, the fact remains that Marvel has not given any official comment on this topic.
Even Chris himself seems to find it rather surprising. In a cryptic tweet not aimed at anyone, Chris stated “News to me,” which can indicate that he has no plans to return as the beloved superhero.
Chris had confirmed regardless that Endgame would be his last, and he even wrote an emotional post, which clearly indicated goodbye.
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day, to say the least. Playing this role over the last eight years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful,”

3. Chris’s Contract with Marvel
Back in 2018, Chris clarified that his contract with Marvel had been renewed, which allowed him to be part of Avengers: Endgame. However, he also clearly stated that that would be the end of his journey as Steve Rogers in the MCU.
Here’s what he said :
“I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter. They said they had so many other characters to fit in—Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man—and couldn’t get them all into one movie. [I agreed] because it made sense. It’s going to wrap everything up.”

But things are always open to change in the entertainment business. So there might always be room for possibilities.
Marvel’s boss Kevin Feige also refuted the rumors. Here’s what he added:
“I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself.”

4. Possible Phase 4 Cameos
We might see Chris in a cameo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, perhaps in a flashback or to train the new Captain America, which could either be Sam Wilson or the current replacement, i.e. John Walker.
Just in case Chris does decide to return as Captain America, the more plausible chances are of him appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, albeit in an alternate universe. So we might see different versions of the common MCU characters as well, which might include Steve Rogers. It would be interesting to see what kind of role Chris might have as Steve Rogers in alternate universes.
If not that, he could return in Black Widow, which is going to trace Natasha Romanoff’s journey after Captain America: Civil War, and following her story from her childhood to how she finally became an Avenger.
Another possibility could present itself in the recently announced third installment of Ant-Man, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Both these movies involve time travel as a major aspect. So we could get to see Chris in an interesting role in alternate universes.
